leaked preview for N8 is up on mobile review. Eldar seemed all angsty and biased. Rants at Symbian^3 mostly, the hardware seems up to scratch.

Guess all that marching in step for Nokia turns even a fanboy into an enemy. ![]() Most of my non-touchscreen phones in the past were Nokia....but now, I won't even go near Nokia phones with a long long stick. ![]()

Agree that s60v5 lags far behind for touchscreen phones. but for eldar to diss an uncomplete version of Symbian^3 on a prototype set and drawing conclusions about nokia as a result is kinda amusing. In any case Symbian^3 is an intermediate measure until Symbian^4, only then can see if Nokia can keep up in the UI wars

In any case Symbian^3 is an intermediate measure until Symbian^4, only then can see if Nokia can keep up in the UI wars But from what I can see, based on whatever news is in the public domain, I have very low hopes for S^3 and S^4. S^3 only adds a few industry standard stuff to S60v5....to users it's basically : "Big deal" S^4 is a total breakaway, but not much stuff about it, no updates to let the public gain confidence...they actually had to setup a blog to fish for ideas from the public. One can call it trying to gain more features, but on the flipside it means they have no friggin idea what to do. ![]() I can only say : Hope they do right this last round...otherwise, it's looking rather bleak....at least for lovers of Nokia phones who like to keep with the trends. ![]()

Anyone thinks that nokia will provide an update for the N8 when the new Symbian^4 OS when it's out? Like the n900 maemo to meego?

Depends on how radical the change from S^3 to S^4 is. All S^4 apps will be written in Qt as opposed to Avkon which is what most Symbian apps are written in now.
Personally I doubt it. The N900 is an enthusiast device so anything can be pretty much hacked onto it because users can get root access to the bootloader and stuff. Normal Nokia smartphones don't offer that level of access to the user and the most I've seen is custom firmwares on new phones. |

Actually Eldar was a very biased Nokia supporter in the beginning, before touchscreen phones rose in popularity. ![]()

![]() ![]() And just like that, it's official. We heard back at CTIA that Nokia's N8 would see an official reveal during April, and just a few short days after surfacing in Russia, that very smartphone has indeed been announced over in Espoo. There's not much here we didn't know about -- it'll be rocking a 12 megapixel camera (with Carl Zeiss optics and a Xenon flash), 3.5-inch capacitive touchscreen, HDMI output, 16GB of internal storage, a microSD expansion slot, HD video recording, access to Ovi Store apps, free Ovi Maps walk and drive navigation, and of course, the company's new Symbian^3 operating system. The N8 touts multiple, personalizable homescreens "which can be loaded with apps and widgets," native multitasking, support for multitouch gestures and integration with the Qt software development environment. It'll also ship in a variety of lovely hues (read: five), with availability pegged for "select markets" in Q3 for €370 ($494) without any subsidies involved. Not like it'll have any other competition up in its grille by that point or anything...

First thoughts: The demo video with the guy showing off the N8 looks good. Phone looks to be running in real time and not an edited promo vid that fooled everyone like the N97. Biggest gripes with S60v5 seem to have been solved. Looking positive so far

One con to look out for if it matters to you....it appears to have a non user removable battery.
That shouldn't be a problem, judging by the horde of Iphone users out there. ![]()

Think the non-removable battery thing is an error, or at least sure hope it is! It uses the BP-4D from the n97 mini which is removable, but maybe the aluminium casing of the N8 can't be opened?
