Is there a mini msata SSD?

I am looking to replace the msata cache ssd of the DELL vostro 5460 (once i buy the laptop from PC show). Some of the promoters said cannot replace the cache ssd with a msata ssd, only hdd with ssd.

I took a look at the online DELL manual for this model and it seems that the cache ssd is different from the normal ones i see online. The image from the manual may not be accurate but I am giving it the benefit of doubt.

Can i buy this kind of mini msata ssd from SLS and are they much more expensive to the standard msata ssd? Alternatively, I can replace the 500gb hdd to ssd but I feel a combination of 500gb hdd and 128gb ssd makes more sense (both cost and functionalities).

Sorry if this comes a little late.

I just received my mini mSATA (128GB) yesterday and currently using it in my Vostro 5460.

Seems that there are not much choices in the market for mini mSATA.

I got it here. I used Amazon and comgateway to ship to Singapore (much cheaper SGD$20). It took about 10 days for it to reach me.

If you are interested I could post some pictures and benchmarks.

As can see from the previous postings saying that Dell Vostro 5460 is using mini mSATA. Would like to know if I want to upgrade/add the mini mSATA in it, what is the maximum size that compatible for it?

Besides, can i use the normal 500GB HDD and mini mSATA (for eg. 256GB SSD) at the same time?

I think the description is wrong in the first place. mSATA comes in two form factors. The full height and half height mSATA, I don't recall there is a mini mSATA. Most of Dell platforms should be using Full height mSATA except for one model, there maybe more right now.

mSATA using the PCIExpress minicard standard. You can get more information from the PCIExpress SIG group. There are some differences in the signal pin used by both these committee, but the form factor is quite the same.

Full height mSATA largest capacity right now is 512GB, but there is only one vendor that I know right now that offers that. Another is offering a 500GB solution. The rest should be able to offer something soon.

So far the mini mSATA largest size that I have managed to find is 128GB from Amazon.

The connector is mSATA no doubt, but from the pic that you've provided, it is def half height/ low profile card. The normal mSATA SSD is quite tall, due to the variance in storage size. For SSD cache, they tend to be very limited in size, typically between 8 to 32GB max. So some manufacturers uses a low profile/ half height card to save space and cut cost on the PCB.

Yes you are correct that the mSATA is half height. I have found an mSATA half height 128GB from Amazon. Using it in fact. Guess that is the max size for now.

Also it is relatively hard to get mSATA half height from SG anyways.

I'm from Brazil, and Vostro 5470 was released here a few days ago..
It's very hard to find info about the Motherboard/mSata, and neither Dell's technicians can ensure me that mSata + HDD works together, nor the mSata port type........

I think that the models are very similar (manual shows exactly the same photo of the mSata).. Could you please confirm me my 2 doubts?

- mSata micro and Hd are working fine at the same time? OS is installed in the HD or in the mSata?
- The mSata port is SATA2, SATA3 or neither one?

The form factor is not the same, it is identical. Except that mSATA slots are electronically incompatible with mPCIe and vice versa.

Only expensive boards feature a mPCIe - mSATA combo slot that accepts both types of cards. And to date I have yet to encounter a notebook that makes use of such a slot; most of them are strictly mPCIe-only or mSATA-only.
