Eh the stats core mod are rly confusing leh. checked the archive for the last 2 yrs and that some mod are rather inconsistent.

Like 10/11 Sem 1 - ST3234 , ST3236 , ST3243 , ST3244
Sem 2 - ST3232 , ST3239 , ST3241 , ST3242

Then 11/12 Sem 1 - ST3233 , ST3236 , ST3243 , ST3244
Sem 2 - ST3232 , ST3240 , ST3241 , ST3242

Then 12/13 Sem 1 - ST3233 , ST3234 , ST3236 , ST3243
Then this coming Sem is taken from the CORS builder which offers ST3232 , ST3236 , ST3239 , ST3241 , ST3242 , ST3244.

Like abit confusing de. Hard to plan for nx yr leh. :(

Like ST3236 now offered in both sem le? And seems like ST3234 and ST3239 skip 3 sems. And how come ST3244 is now in Sem 2 liao? Weird :s11:

This year is indeed 'better' in a sense for offering many stats mods. From my experience, i can tell you the 'ídea' for lvl3000/lvl4000 mods.

lvl3000 mods

ST3236, ST3243 will be offered every sem 1.
ST3232, ST3241 are offered every sem 2.
by right,ST3244 should be offered in sem 1, but this year it is in sem 2.

The rest of the mods, ST3234, ST3239, ST3242 are offered in rotation.

lvl4000

ST4231, ST4233 is on sem 1(since they changed it such that they are compulsory mods)
ST4241,ST4234 are on sem 1.

ST4238,ST4240,ST4242,ST4245 on every sem 2.

ST4232 on rotation (this year being a special case)

Hope it helps!

Actually it is possible to take a Financial Maths minor for a Stats major.
The overlap is in ST2131 and MA1102R (1/3 aka 8MCs overlap)
However, the other 4 modules necessary (for the fin math minor) cannot be used to count towards the requirements for the stats major.

if only ma1102r and st2131 can be used as overlapping then how about st3131? we have to read it in both stats major and fm minor. we have to use other mods to replace it?

I dont think ST3234 is tot every 2 year lar.. these are from the past archives starting from 03/04 sem1 to the upcoming sem:
1 means offered for the sem, - means not offered..

- 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - - 1 - 1 - - - 1 -

so i dun think there is a definite pattern of when it is offered... unless our batch so suay they decide to introduce the once every 2 year thing now.

Hey guys, I've been reading this thread and I need to consult you guys as I am entering FoS this year. I know this is a stats thread but I couldn't find an applied maths thread.

I am looking to major in QF but I highly doubt I'll get in due to the competition. My backup plan would be to enter applied maths with financial interest.

I was hoping someone here could give me an idea of how much difference both of these majors have and how much I would be losing out to QF students, esp wrt to career options after graduating.

Thanks for the help everyone.

If u intend to do the QF route, u can declare as math major and take the required mod and interview for the QF at the end of yr1 . and yea the competition is tough. If not, u can declare as app math major and specialise in finance in the later yrs.

i dunno about applied math maj.. but for QF, they usually need to further study after getting their honors. Career wise, i went for the interview and the interviewer told me it is a high risk high return job.. meaning u can be earning high pay but u can also be jobless for a very long time as it follow the financial cycle closely... the interviewer told me quite a few fresh grad have difficulty finding jobs over the past few years.

Thats pretty much all i know liao, if u wan to know more u can wait for Raichu29125 to reply, he is a QF major.

SSS1207 clash with ST3239 :( Sad, if not tot of clearing ss.
But then ST3239 like quite rare to come by.

Eh btw u last sem take 2 cores onli ar?

And from what u have seen from the past archive, its offered yearly last time but now is getting v rare? so there will also be a chance that it is offered nx yr?
