Personal/Retail: Just bring in the money, you keep your job. Philo degree also can
Corporate: Same as above, but you usually won't get hired if you don't have good results and/or some accounting/finance degree. More knowledge required.
Investment Banking: Same as above, but even more onerous requirements.
Sales & Trading: Can enter without finance degree, but need proof of ability if lacking in academic credentials.
Risk: Usually need some economics/finance/accounting/maths/engineering related degree or relevant experience.
Compliance: Hot market that will take in just about anyone for junior roles.
Ops: You probably won't want to study an MBA for this.
Easiest way: Connections. No degree also no prob

Does an MBA help me: No one can tell you for certain. If you got some years of industry knowledge (eg. doing marketing for several oil companies), you may get a banking job in that industry. If not, you better be the guy with perfect GPA that will make employers take a second glance. MBAs here are not as valued as US.

Master's degree in finance? Will get you interviews if from a prestigious school and you already have at least some internship experience (so you are not a complete greenhorn). Usually done by people with less/no work experience.

CFA: Much cheaper, at the very least it has a signalling effect that you have some interest and knowledge. Whether it will get you interviews is hard to say, but could be a tiebreaker between being called for an interview and getting your application filtered out by HR.

Long story short:

Graduating soon from local uni BBA program.

Did badly in first year undergrad, failed one core mod.

Didn't get into the specialization that I wanted - Finance.

Ended up in Marketing, most likely graduating with 2nd lowers hons, unable to push up to 2nd uppers.

Rejected by local/foreign banks for their management associate programs/normal roles - for both full time jobs and internships.

Question: If taking up an MBA worth it in the future to break into finance?
I have zero experience/ understanding of finance, other than the basics.

I doubt i will be able to enter any local MBAs with a 2nd lower and preferably I don't really want to go back to a local institution again due to their rigidity and how the courses are structured (not assuming all locals are the same, but at least mine is)

EDIT: Will the CFA be a better alternative or a masters level finance program to break into finance.

I understand that the MBA will most likely overlap a lot with BBA, but am interested in the finance mods.

Thanks

I guess the mba might give you the better chance to break into finance but the cfa/ finance masters will give you the better finance knowledge

actually, many of my MBA friends are in pretty dead end jobs. even when placed with top organizations, they're doing the saikang, or doing exactly what i was doing with a BBA specializing in marketing (i didnt even get an honours for that mind you).

the ones that made a difference either got good GPA, or were good at work.
just apply for jobs, and slowly climb from there before deciding on MBA. MBA is like a bra, if no substance, people will see you're empty inside.

after awhile you'll see that CFA/ Masters in Fin may be more useful.

Are you sure you want to do finance in the first place?

Suggest you talk to seniors working in the finance sector that you want to work in to understand the job nature.

I am a BBA honors grad with finance specialisation, in a GLC doing investment related work. Deal more with lawyers, consultants than coming up with financial models.

Try to be more clear of what you are aiming for.

MBA will be consider good to study if an experience executive wish to move up to managerial position.

Most job in finance or other industry does not needs a MBA unless they stated in their job advertisement which mostly found in Managerial position with US MNC.

I have a reservist mate who have around 5 years of experience as an Engineer & quit his job to study full time MBA in local university. He get a job in Bank after he graduate but I'm not sure what is his position.

Recruiter will first see main qualification like Master Degree before Sub-qualification like CFA. So I will recommended Master Degree in Finance.

But the thing is getting Master Degree in Finance or CFA does not help you to get into bank.

Since you are interested in Finance Industry, how does insurance agent sound to you? Please, I am not trolling.

I understand that the MBA will most likely overlap a lot with BBA, but am interested in the finance mods.

What do you really want?

I think what he or anybody who are interested in the finance industry wants is the potential to make big bucks. Probably big bucks sounds too subtle. Should be insane amount of money. Only MBA from top schools plus lots of networking and luck can fulfil that target.
