You should get him a light weighted not powerful laptop so he can focus on studies instead, else he might get indulged in gaming.

The Dell Inspirion 15 7000 with a GTX 1050ti will be sufficient to run most of today's AAA titles in high and in some cases ultra at 60fps.

But the colours on the screen will not be as good as other TN panels so be forewarned. You can off set that with a $300 monitor if you want.

If you don't like Dell, there are other brands like Aftershock who also sport a 1050ti on their notebooks. Just look for anything that has a 1050ti in it if you want to stay below the 2k range and your son will be fine.

You'll have to spend slightly more than 2k for a 1060, but you'll futureproof it to an extent. A 1050ti is equivalent to a 970m in terms of performance and pascal cards like the 1060 outstrip the previous generation by almost 40%.

I've owned it's predecessor the msi ghost pro. It's a solid machine and you can't go wrong in terms of build although I would say that the chassis heated pretty quickly enough to make it uncomfortable on your lap.
hopefully your m.2 slots are within reach cause I had to remove my motherboard to do the upgrade.
