Not sure, but read around that it's either a metallic finishing or a metal casing. Notice that this phone is not only marketed as a walkman and cybershot in one, it's another main point is that it's optimize for watching videos and a full charge can last a 5 hours video viewing.

and what's the metal hook for?

It contains two speakers; one at the top with the 3.5mm jack and the other at the bottom. The hook is used to stable the phone when placed in a landscape position (Mostly used when watching movies/videos)
