Boot into BIOS and check whether there is an entry for your DVD drive.

Either way, you'll have to replace it. Bring to the service centre if you're feeling rich, or Sim Lim Square if you're feeling poor. A laptop DVDRW replacement drive should not cost over $100. I can get it for $90.

I think an application changed the upper-filters in the registry key for your CD/DVD drive so windows cannot detect. It happened to me once.

try running regedit
Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROL SET\CONTROL\CLASS
Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
The whole thing looks like this:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then delete the upper and lower filters....
Restart your computer.
