Very weird problem with dad's laptop's harddisk

Guys as the title states, i am having trouble with my dad's laptop.

Its an old acer 2420 and i took out its hard disk to reformat and reinstall windows.

After i formatted it, a weird problem popped up.
The problem is that whenever i reinsert the hard disk into the laptop, the dvd drive wont work. It has the same problem with my desktop. So, now i cannot install windows through startup on the laptop or my desktop.

*note* The hard disk is a hitachi 40gb notebook ide and i used an adapter to connect it to my Desktop.

Please help! and thx in advance

it is extremely rare to see a hdd causing the optical drive to stop working. but it seems to me that there could be a conflict in the ide master/slave configuration. when you say the dvd drive wont work, does it means that the drive cannot be detected in the bios or windows?

if it isn't detected by the bios, then confirm it is not the problem with windows. most likely is the conflict between the master/slave configuration. if u are connecting the hdd and the dvd drive together with one single IDE cable, be sure to set one of them as master and the other as slave on the drive itself. both cannot be of the same configuration, otherwise conflicts will occur.

you mean a portable HDD to a laptop? I think it's because the OS Assign the Optical Div letter to your Portable HDD. That's why your DVD rom disappear. Because you cannot have two drive with the same Drv letter.

You can go to Control Panal -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management -> Disk Management

Change the DVD Rom or the Portable HDD Drive Letter.

If you are very sure that the harddisk is already set to master and your dvd drive is already set to slave, power connectors of both drives properly connected to power supply, ide cables working properly, the adaptor is working fine and bios drive detection all set to auto, and still cant detect harddisk, then chances is that the hard disk logic board has already failed.
