New Zealand International Undergraduate Fees Scholarships Funded by the New Zealand Government and administered by Education New Zealand, the New Zealand International Undergraduate Fees Scholarships (NZIUFS) are a significant educational opportunity.
The Scholarships provide financial support by way of international tuition fees for eligible students from designated localities undertaking undergraduate study at New Zealand institutions. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of academic merit.
A World Class Opportunity New Zealand institutions provide the opportunity to study under internationally recognised academics and researchers in a range of disciplines. A qualification from a New Zealand institution ranks with the best internationally.
New Zealand degrees have a reputation globally for being practical, modern and desirable. In some niche areas such as biotechnology, forensic science and marine engineering, New Zealand degrees are acknowledged as being world leading. Students educated in the New Zealand education environment are earning a reputation as a new breed of innovative thinkers and are enjoying success the world over.
Educational Partnership
The New Zealand International Undergraduate Scholarships reflect the New Zealand Government’s commitment to deepening New Zealand’s educational partnerships with participating countries and regions.
The New Zealand education system provides students with the knowledge and skills to achieve results equal to the world’s best. The scholarship programme is about sharing this excellence with the rest of the world, and bringing the best from elsewhere to share their knowledge with New Zealand.
Up to 28 scholarships will be awarded for students undertaking undergraduate study in the 2006 New Zealand academic year. Students are to submit their applications to the designated agency in their country of citizenship. They will then nominate a set number of candidates to Education New Zealand for final selection.

The Selection Process
Awarded solely on the basis of merit, Jefferson Scholarships are granted to candidates who have undergone a rigorous selection process. Each year the Foundation identifies finalists through two avenues: 45 regional competitions around the country, and a separate competition for all students, including international applicants to U.Va., attending schools not eligible to compete in the regional competitions. For the 2004-2005 competition, the Foundation received over 800 nominations from secondary schools participating in the regional competitions. Regional selection committees—comprised of alumni and friends of the University—review transcripts, extracurriculars, essays, and teacher recommendations before conducting one or more rounds of interviews.
Of these regional nominees, 85 finalists were chosen to come to Charlottesville to compete at the National Selection Weekend. Additionally, with the cooperation of the University's Office of Admission, all applicants to the University who attended secondary schools outside the geographical regions, applicants to the Schools of Nursing and Architecture, and all international applicants were screened as potential Jefferson Scholar candidates. In 2004-2005 the Jefferson Scholars Foundation invited eleven of these additional candidates to the national competition.
In March, all 96 finalists arrived on Grounds for the four-day National Selection Weekend. Activities included participation in seminars led by University professors, a written exercise, a math/logic exam, and personal interviews. At the competition’s conclusion, the National Selection Committee offered Jefferson Scholarships to 44 of the finalists.
No one may apply for a Jefferson Scholarship. For the regional competitions, a prospective Jefferson Scholar must be nominated by his/her school (eligible schools may nominate one student per year from the senior class). A total of 2,100 secondary schools were eligible to participate in the regional competitions in 2004-2005. To be considered in the at-large and international screening processes, students must have applied to the University and returned their completed application to the Office of Admission by January 1. Additionally, at-large and international candidates must request that the Educational Testing Service forward their SAT results directly to the University.

You must have completed the equivalent of a U.S. High school education program that is recognized by the Ministry of Education in your home country. An applicant's academic record will be evaluated according to the national standards of his or her country and equivalency to the American education system. Scores from aptitude test, for example, the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) or the Academic Collegiate Test (ACT), may also be reviewed in determining an applicant's academic competitiveness. Though not required, these scores may enhance your application.
All students are urged to apply for admission well in advance of the semester they wish to attend. However, the application for admission and all required credentials must reach the university by April 1 for the summer (June and July) and fall (beginning in August) terms; and October 1 for the spring term (beginning in January). If you are selected as a recipient of a scholarship, you will be contacted by the end of the semester prior to your entry to the UA.

The student unions in universities, however, charge an annual membership fee to cover their activities. At the University Helsinki, the fee was 67 € for the academic year 2005-06. Student health services are included in this fee. Membership is compulsory for those who are studying for their Bachelor’s or Master’s degrees; doctoral students may join the union if they wish. As for the exchange students, they do not have to pay the fee thanks to the regulations of exchange programmes and agreements, the fee is paid for them by the International Student Services.
All students have to pay for their books and other materials, plus their accommodation and living expenses. The total monthly living expenses of a single student average from 600 to 900 €. The rents in student dormitories and residence halls vary from 280 to 500 € per month.
The Student Union membership entitles students to various services at affordable prices as well as to different kinds of student discounts. In some cases the student status itself may give students some benefits.
