2wire 2700HG - Bridge Mode no PPPoE?

Hi,

I recently purchased a DLink DIR-655 and I intend to use it in tandem with my 2Wire 2700HG as a modem, which I believe involves setting it to bridge mode.

I Googled and pretty much worked out that the 2wire is set to bridge mode via the "Management and Diagnostic Console" located at http://192.168.1.254/mdc under Advanced > Configure Services > [uncheck] Enable Routing. However, this also disables PPPoE, which apparently makes it impossible to login to my SingNet 10mbps account.

EDIT: I have also disabled "ATM PVC Search".

What should I do now?

Thanks and regards.

Thanks very much I didn't realise that the DIR-655 (and I'm assuming wireless routers in general) could actually dial the connection on the bridge modem that it is connected too

EDIT: Just got it to work, thanks again. This router is quite amazing in terms of configuration settings

You mean

2WIRE 2700HG (bridge) <--(RJ45)--> DLink DIR-655 (PPPoE + wireless) -------> PC or laptop

??

1. Try to reset the 2WIRE 2700, it should be bridge mode ready

2. Configure DLink DIR-655 with PPPoE, userid, password , wireless settings, DHCP on

3. If PC or laptop using cable, check LAN connection > properties > TCP/IP > Properties , set to auto detect IP address
For wireless, set PC or laptop same setting to (2)

If unable to work, go to Start > run, Open "cmd"
From DOS window, type "ipconfig" <ENTER>
paste the result here

Thanks for your efforts megaweb but everything is OK now

The connection is as you describe, 2Wire -> RJ45 -> DLink -> Wireless + Wired, broadband configured with PPPoE in the DLink itself, rather than the 2Wire.

We don't know what stages you're at already.

Maybe you'd wan to begin by saying what you have already done?

These directions for enabling bridging mode are to only be used by customers with the prior knowledge that any configuration issues or problems that arise during the use of bridging mode are not supported. 2Wire Technical Support can only support a HomePortal when it is fully functioning as a router.

There is a factory reset on the back of the HomePortal. It is a red dot located between the ethernet port(s) and the usb port. Press and hold the button with a paper clip for 10 seconds. This will reset the HomePortal to factory state. Also, on this particular model, it is required that you reset the HomePortal this way before the bridge mode setup will work. Once you have done this, follow the steps below:

- Browse to http://gateway.2wire.net/management
- Click on Configure under Broadband Link
- Enter VPI 0 and VCI 35
- Click on Disable PVC Search
- Set Connection Type to Direct IP
- Click Submit/Save
- Click on Configure Services under Advanced
- Uncheck Enable Routing
- Click Submit

Now, as this will effectively stop the assigning of IP addresses from the HomePortal, in order to get back in there to re-enable routing, or take the HomePortal out of bridge mode, you will need to tell your computer what IP address to use and where to get it.

As you may know, this is a matter of hardcoding the IP information into the properties of your adapter.
Instead of having it obtain the IP information automatically, you will have to enter it in.

For the IP address, use 192.168.1.30
For the Subnet, use: 255.255.255.0
For the Default Gateway, use: 192.168.1.254

Now you will be telling the computer where the information is. The computer will go there to get it, and the HomePortal will give it to the computer. You can browse back to the Management & Diagnostic Console, and put the check back in to Enable Routing. Then, be sure to set your adapter back to obtain the IP information automatically.

I do have to let you know that while this can be done, it is not recommended, as the bridging function was put in there for testing purposes and not for general use. It can be done, but cannot be guaranteed to (though it should) function properly for your purposes. If you wish to do it, you can, but the HomePortal is not supported if it is in bridging mode.

++++++++++++

All of the ports on the Homeportal will remain active, but only one of them can be connected at any given time. Also the access point will no longer be available. My question to you is why would you want to place the 2700HG into bridge mode when it has the advanced functionality of wireless and multiple LAN ports with an industrial grade firewall? If you are connecting a hardware firewall or DHCP server of some sort I can understand, but beyond that the functionality of the 2700HG has been well planned out to meet the needs of the majority of customers.

First plug the 2wire directly to computer.

- Browse to http://homeportal/mdc (Password:2wire)
- Click on Configure under Broadband Link
- Enter VPI 0 and VCI 100
- Click on Disable PVC Search
- Set Connection Type to Direct IP
- Click Submit/Save
- Click on Configure Services under Advanced
- Uncheck Enable Routing
- Click Submit

Then plug the dedicated router between the 2wire and computer And set up the dedicated router as per normal.
