My results: Starhub vs Singnet

Hi guys,

I recently subscribed to Singnet after being with Starhub for the past 5 (or more?) years. I started with Starhub since SCV, the 1mbps days.

Location: Bukit Gombak (old district)

Using two computers to do comparison. Starhub without a router, Singnet with 2wire router (obvious disadvantage).

My Starhub subscription was 12mbps.
My Singnet subscription is 10mbps.

Browsing results: Almost every site loads faster with Singnet. Youtube loads up instantly.

Http download results using download managers (10 connection):
Gametrailers:
Starhub 1000 - 1100kb/s (non peak hours)
Starhub 100 - 200kb/s (peak hours)
Singnet 1100 - 1300kb/s (non peak hours)
Singnet 1100 - 1300kb/s (peak hours)

Rapidshare (20 connections):
Starhub 600 - 1100kb/s (non peak hours)
Starhub 50 - 400kb/s (peak hours)
Singnet 1100 - 1300kb/s (non peak hours)
Singnet 1100 - 1300kb/s (peak hours)

What's weird here is although Starhub is 12mbps max, I've consistently seen Singnet shoot well above the advertised 10mbps even superseeding Starhub. Also on Rapidshare, Singnet only requires 15 connections to hit max speed, compared to Starhub's 20 connections. This shows Singnet per connection is much faster.

Bittorrent (legal public popular torrent):
Starhub 200 - 700kb/s (non peak hours)
Starhub 30 - 300kb/s (peak hours)
Singnet 300 - 700kb/s (non peak hours)
Singnet 300 - 700kb/s (peak hours)
Bittorrent (legal private popular torrent):
Starhub 600 - 750kb/s (non peak hours)
Starhub 400 - 750kb/s (peak hours)
Singnet 700 - 1100kb/s (non peak hours)
Singnet 700 - 1100kb/s (peak hours)

Singnet is again consistently better than Starhub. I've never seen my torrent files hit 1000kb/s with Starhub before, so I was pretty shocked by what I saw.

Gaming Dota:
Starhub 0.2 - 1 sec lag (non peak hours)
Starhub 1 - 1.2 sec lag (peak hours)
Singnet 0.5 sec lag (non peak hours)
Singnet 0.5 sec lag (peak hours)

Gaming wise, I can't decide. Singnet gives a consistent lag, while Starhub sometimes (50%) gives a lag of less than 0.5 sec, making the reactions very quick, very easy to deny/last hit. Singnet's 0.5 sec lag does bug me a little, but it's very very consistent.

Uploading to my own server:
Starhub 40 - 60kb/s (non and peak hours)
Singnet 90 - 105kb/s (non and peak hours)

Obvious Singnet wins here

Ping to my own servers:
Starhub pings 250ms on server A
Starhub pings 350ms on server B
Singnet pings 250ms on server A
Singnet pings 250ms on server B

Singnet edges Starhub on pinging my 2nd server, with 100ms improvement. Loading to my sites are reasonably faster as well.

Conclusion:

I feel like an idiot sticking with Starhub for so many years. I was afraid of going with Singnet after hearing horror stories about how old building cable lines and Singnet ADSL are a pair made in hell. After the past 6 months of ridiculous Starhub peak hour horrors and the recent Singnet laptop offer, I finally swapped sides.

I'm plenty darn happy I did so.

Hope this is useful for you guys.

Cheers!

I can say that it's not old building cable lines and ADSL that's a pair made in hell.

Because the block I live in is less than 5 year old yet it's still a pair made in hell with ADSL. That was 2 years ago.

Like that considered myth busted or not?

Precisely. Ppl keep spreading rumours.

But then I still suggest you to go with SingNet

it is better but you have to check your line quality though, or you're stuck with a 3 year plan with dcs every minute

Actually I'm quite impressed that TS actually stuck with SCV all the way from the 1.5mbps days.

I mean, I jumped from Magix, then SCV, then SNBB, then moved house (counted as a change, becuz there was indeed a change in performance, suggesting area do matter)(plus I had to face their shyt customer service one more time, pay extra money, and had no internet for almost a month until it finally worked), switched to Starhub again, now re-contracted Starhub. (If only I had better experiance with SNBB, then I'd have signed up for the IPod plan)

Bukit Gombak should be newer than my old house in Tampines when I signed up for Magix and SNBB.

ok la, 2 years ago on SNBB, then change to starhub, cancel the fixed line and use DV. My house not so new, yet not too old. 13years nia.

Last time SNBB also lag like hell, then i jump to Starhub, then now starhub lag, seems like gonna jump ship again. haha.

PROBLEM is ... no use for fixed line. Fixed line have to pay $53+ for one-time reg, and $26++ per quarter.

IF I am not wrong, when your phone line is faulty, you can always ask SingTel to check the phone lines. BUT, the catch is, SingTel only maintains the line that is laid right to your doorstep (that is still considered "public domain"). Anything beyond that (into your house), you will have to pay for yourself.

Have been with Starhub for 3 years plus, but after suffering through months of slow loading sites, I gave up. Singned up to Singnet about a month ago and have not regretted it since. I did not expect the change to be so drastic, but it was. It just goes to show how badly Starhub is short-changing its customers.
