Starhub HD set-top box vs Hubstation

HD set-top box

With the HD set-top box, you can:

* access StarHub Digital Cable High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) channels
* automatically set pictures to Widescreen format (16:9)
* have Dolby ® Digital 5.1 Surround Sound support
* enjoy video resolutions 576i, 576p, 720p & 1080i

Key Terms and Conditions:

1. Applicable New and Existing StarHub Digital Cable customers.
2. Minimum monthly subscription of $34.24 (w/GST) is required
3. 12-month contract
4. Promotion Early Termination Charge of $203.81

HubStation
Watch. Surf. Talk. All with one clever device.
Imagine having a Digital Video Recorder (DVR), a cable modem and the ability to make phone calls, all from one compact device. That’s HubStation – a clever box that will change the way you watch TV, surf the Internet and talk on the phone.

On top of giving you better control over your TV viewing experience. HubStation comes with free broadband internet service and the ability for you to make unlimited local calls for one flat fee!

Plus, you don't have to be a cable TV subscriber to get the best of HubStation. Not only does it work with free-to-air TV channels, it now gives you the freedom to enjoy the best of CableTV where you pay only for what you watch. Only with FlexiWatch.

What's Hot about HubStation?

* Free^ 1Mbps Broadband Internet Access
* Use Smart TV™ to enjoy TV in your own time
* Pay as you watch with FlexiWatch#
* 60 hours of recording time
* Instant TV listings from On-Screen TV Guide
* Access to StarHub Digital Cable and free-to-air TV channels
* Unlimited local calls from your residential phone line at one flat fee*
* Automatic software enhancements

^Free 1Mbps Broadband Internet Access valid till 31 December 2008. Relevant devices required for Internet connectivity.
*Supports Digital Voice Travel and subscription is required. Free unlimited calls valid till 31 December 2008.
#FlexiWatch is not applicable to customers with HubStation on post-paid StarHub Digital Cable Services.

Which one is more worth since now got promotion?
HubStation @ $197.95 (24 month contract)
HD set-top box $48.15 + Free 3 months HD Plus (12 month contract)

According to starhub website, seems HD STB will automatically set pictures to Widescreen format (16:9) so doesn't it the ppl show will not be short short like that while Hubstation will still show short short ppl :p

And is it really HD STB will have better PQ then Hubstation as well, thanks.

The HD Setup box basically is useful if you really want access to HD Channels and if none of the HD channels interest you then it is probably not that useful.

The Hubstation on the other hand allows you to record shows and make use of the free 1mbps internet plan.

In theory, High Definition signals should give you better picture quality and all that compared to the analogue signals but at the moment, there is very limited choices of HD shows that the benefit of the HD Setup box may not be for everyone.

Its the wrong place to talk about the HD box vs normal digital box, but one thing i wish to stress. My experience of the HD box compared to the normal digital box (non hubstation) was big.

HD box does improve picture quality even for normal non-HD channels, especially when your TV is a LCD. When i pair it with a HDMI connection, i can see very obvious improvement. Sharpness, reduce pixelization of the picture and the cleaner sounding sound. The interactive menu now shows the correct color and is more responsive.

All these improvement are not magic. Its due to the fact that to render HD, the video scaler on board needs to be of a higher quality. The other component of the HD box is the ability to output DD5.1 sounds via HDMI or optical. This means the sound chip used must also be of a higher quality and better feature sets.

However, its also true that these improvement dont always shows fully. Depending on the channel and the source quality, for example News channel, the picture quality will never be as good as a theater production. The saving grace is that now, the box isnt playing the active part of degrading your picture quality.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Because currently my scv channel is quite blur so just thinking by switching from current scv digital box to either HD set-top box or hubstation will help or not.

So you mean even for no-hd channel the PQ will also improve right

it will be slightly better, but its not a mircale device. your PQ is only as good as the source PQ. using older box will degrade the PQ even more then the HD box especially on LCD TVs.

I'm interested to get one HD setup box for my room... just a little confirmation for those who have one at home to advise me some advise further as below..

With the HD set-top box, you can:

* access StarHub Digital Cable High Definition (HD) and Standard Definition (SD) channels
* automatically set pictures to Widescreen format (16:9)

Does it means all SD channel or just HD5 ?
It is worth if I bought for HD 5 for viewing with connection to SCV, will I be able to get this signal through the HD setup box provide from SCV or other model also available. Thanks

By now I think HD5 does come as a free channel for starhub HD box.
Should be worth getting if the SD pic quality can be improved though there is only 1 free channel.

Isn't there already a HD version for Hubstation too? Best of both but higher monthly rental.
