hey there...I just bought a kindle and it worked fine, until i receive an email from amazon stating that they detected that the book which i purchased is sent to a country outside US (which is what i stated in my billing address)...right now, amazon is asking for proof that I am a US resident (e.g. fax of social security number, copy of passport..) any ideas on how to solve this? thanks in advance!

Hmm, Amazon start cracking down? my billing address is also non US, but have not received any email yet.....

if amazon want to be so hard on us, then i will have to stop buying bks from them and ask them to refund me my USD 9.99....

Just realize that the download to PC method does not work for my laptop without VPN, anyone has this issue?

Amazon sent me the following email:-

"I see that you attempted to purchase a kindle book while in a different country than the United States listed on your Amazon account. Certain Kindle titles are not available everywhere. We are reaching out to you for information to ensure the best possible service for your account. If you have moved to a different country, you can easily update your country for your Amazon account at www.Amazon.com/manageyourkindle. If this is not the case, and you’re actually residing in the United States, please fax us any of the following at 001-206-266-1838 when faxing from outside the US, or 206-266-1838 from within the US:
- Passport
– Military ID
– Permanent Resident Card
– Driver’s License
– Other state photo identity card "

Will it work if i change my billing address or delete my billing address altogether?

I think what Amazon wants is for you to declare that you're no longer residing in the states then they will start to ensure that certain books are not available for your purchase. It won't render your Kindle useless but I guess you will have a smaller selection lor. This is part of the mess that Amazon has to deal with called Copyright.

What if you just use wifi for all network stuff instead, will they still charge extra?

Probably another noob question, can you remove the simcard and replace with local one?

I just ordered a Kindle 2 on eBay to be shipped via ShopOnline (comgateway). Has anyone shipped via comGateway, and were there any problems (i.e. rejection by comgateway?)

Also, is the leather case really necessary if I carry the Kindle around in a sling bag? I read that the official case has caused Kindles to break, so I'm considering the other covers available, but they're all quite expensive when you factor in the shipping cost. My Kindle was US$180, don't feel like paying another US$30-35 for a simple leather case...

There is no wifi feature on Kindle 2, only GSM.

Simcard is embedded, AT&T, cannot replace with local sim card, even though some forum claim there is another sim card slot in the Kindle 2.

Surfing on the web for Kindle 2, according to Amazon notice which found in the Kindle 2, is "free". But since Singapore is not on the official available list of Amazon, they may say that we breached their service agreement and start charging users in Spore (crossing my fingers).

Of course you should get one haha... one difference I think is the user design interface and the button placements. It's not supported officially in sg but by left it works very well. google 'singapore kindle'; i have a writeup on how to use it here...

Not really, it also supports other formats, like PDF, TXT, and so on. You can buy ebooks from other sources without DRM, and get it converted to PDF.

Buying ebooks from amazon for kindle 2

Hi, I placed my order for kindle2 in amazon and finally it is shipping. Can't wait for it to arrive any sooner!!

One question on buying kindle ebooks - should I still go through the route of purchasing gift certificates to buy ebooks or can I can just use 1-click shopping with my SG credit card? Also, do I still need to use hotspot VPN? I look through this discussion thread and it seems now we don't need to go through such hoops anymore?

FYI, I bought the kindle using my SG credit card, and in my 'Manage my Kindle' page, it listed my registered country as Singapore. Would that make any difference?

Thanks a lot!
