MBP gets cranky

Am typing on my Macbook as my unibody MBP has gone cranky. It was ok all along and I itchy backside decided to try Safari (am on Firefox now). So I exported my bookmarks as HTML file and imported in Safari. I had both browsers open simultaneously as I forgot to close Firefox.

After about 5 mins, I gave up as I just wasn't used to Safari. So I exited and fired up Firefox again. Had 3 tabs open. Nothing new, done that before. SUddenly Firefox freezes and I can't even exit it. I can't even restart my Mac. Had to press power button to power down. Gave it 2 - 3 mins then powered up again.

Went straight into Firefox this time. No more Safari. And again it hangs. Again I can't force it to shut down nor can I reboot.

But there's no spinning beach ball though. And its the same websites I've visited before. Not some "funny" site.

Anyone able to assist please?

Anyone at all? Was a bit better this morning but still hung. Not a complete hang though. I could minimise it and there was no spinning beach ball. Just that there was no activity and I couldn't quit. Had to press option-command-esc and force it from there.

Don't understand. Its the same websites I've viewed all along. Have not installed any new extensions or made an changes at all.

Have you tried to repair permissions? Another thing could be preference file corruption...you can try re-installing Firefox. For Safari issues, there is an reset safari option.

As always, back up any important files before re-installation. Hope it helps.

Try reinstalling FireFox.

TimeMachine is an option if you use it.

Thanks everyone. It seems ok now (touchwood). If it occurs again I'll try your suggestions.
