V-League was roused by T&T Hanoi’s announcement that it was prepared to pay several hundred billion dong to buy three superstars - Deco, Van Nistelrooy and Guti.
Nobody doubts T&T Hanoi’s financial capability, but money is not the most important factor in the acquisition of world football stars.
Some statements similar to T&T Hanoi’s were made before. In 2007, Hoang Anh – Gia Lai, one of the richest football clubs in Vietnam, announced it would sign a contract with the Czech star Karel Poborsky. At that time, Poborsky had passed his brightest days and left Lazio club for a local club named Ceske Budejovice. Finally, Poborsky didn’t come to Vietnam, but Hoang Anh – Gia Lai didn’t offer any explanation.
In early 2009, Hai Phong Cement said it had nearly finalised a contract with a former star of Inter Milan club, Mohamed Kallon. This club even announced the date that Kallon would come to Vietnam, but this player didn’t come because he didn’t agree with Hai Phong Cement’s suggested salary and transfer fees and V-League’s quality was not at his level.
A short time later, Hai Phong Cement surprised Vietnamese fans by introducing the Brazilian superstar Denilson de Oliveira. It was thought that this world famous player would help the club climb up the V-League rankings.
However, Denilson struggled with an injury and played in just a half a match, scoring one goal. He lasted just 20 days in Vietnam. It turned out that the contract with Denilson was a trick by Hai Phong Cement to advertise itself because this superstar was virtually an invalid.
Karel Poborsky and Mihamed Kallon had been world superstars. When the Vietnamese clubs invited them to Vietnam they were nearly at the end of their careers. If waning stars don’t want to come to Vietnam, why would the shining stars that T&T Hanoi is targeting?
V-League ranks 41st among national football championships in the world, said T&T Hanoi’s chairman Do Quang Hien. Yet, in the eyes of Anderson Luis de Souza or Deco, Van Nistelrooy or José MarÃ*a Gutiérrez Hernández, commonly known as Guti, V-League is a zero. This is a big barrier to getting them to Vietnam.
