already have thread helping ppl to go Ivy League Uni..
if Uni like DARTMOUTH an ivy ranked so low.. perhaps a ivy league degree isn't that hard to get.
seem like every GO8 uni is better than that low ranking Ivy Uni.
why go UWA to do DL, when one can go Dartmouth and seek for need blind aid!

u know, the way they write what ratio score here ratio score there makes it sound so cheem... i went to read the page in detail...

personally ah, i feel the employer review should be higher or at least equal to academic peer review what, afterall we are looking at employability of graduates also wad right.

then they themselves say this:

"student facultyStudent Faculty Ratio is, at present, the only globally comparable and available indicator that has been identified to address the stated objective of evaluating teaching quality. Clearly it is not a satisfactory as a qualitative classroom evaluation as might be considered for a domestic teaching assessment, but it does speak to the notion of "commitment to teaching", which ought to correlate strongly, if not compltely with the level of teaching quality."

then they go on to give it 20% weighting, same as citations per faculty (which i feel is a meaningful measure).

then the international students part also like dun make sense lei, we all know international students get into universities easier everywhere because they pay higher school fees, no?

no wonder people always say to take the rankings with a pinch of salt!!! i think generally we shouldn't be following these rankings too closely... as evidenced by NUS/university of melbourne/queensland being higher than LSE or warwick. does anybody really think they are better?? at most on par ba...

My 2 centst worth, ths obsession with university rankings is going a bit too far. True, you can be from cambridge, but you'll still be a salaried employee. The richest people didn't climb to the top with a top class degree. Many lessons can be learned from the girl tammy, who opened a blogshop and progressed to own 2 physical shops and she's already taking in 8-13k a month at the age of 17, all that while still schooling.

Instead of wasting all that money on trying to get a top degree so you can go back to being another salaried worker with no guarantee that the top class degree will pay good dividends, why not put all that energy and money to more meaningful things?

I know this sounds like the ranting from someone who's eating sour grapes because he didn't make it to an "elite" university, but i honestly think too many Singaporeans are joining in the paper chase with unrealistic expectations of whatever that will come out of it. This obsession with university rankings is really incomprehensible.

You don't make any sense. Just because "the richest people" did not depend on educational degrees to make it to the top means we should not care about which university we go to? Why don't you just tell everyone not to bother with university education then? Obviously you can't, because you got a degree yourself. What a hypocrite.

Nobody here is trying to be "the richest people". Ask around. Are we all trying to be some revolutionary entrepreneur? No, most of us are aiming for salaried jobs. There are many different kinds of salaried jobs, with vastly different pay. A janitor is salaried. So is a top executive in a multinational. You stupidly frame all salaried jobs as second-class and automatically undesirable compared to being "the richest people", and from there dismiss the value and advantage of going to elite institutions. Yes, going to Cambridge is no guarantee of making it to the very top, but going to Cambridge WILL give you a higher-paying salaried job than going to some unknown university. Just because you can't be No.1 doesn't mean you don't try to be No. 100 instead of No. 1000000.

No wonder you didn't make it to an elite university.

Yo bro, cool it man. I have never said a degree is not important, and i have never said one should just go to any university. ANd most importantly, i have never said a salaried job is a second class occupation. what i really meant was a lot of people cannot find satisfaction in a 9-5 salaried job. How many of you can tell me they wake up each morning eagerly anticipating going to work? And before u apply to that big gun university, have u truly considered your end goals? Why put words in my mouth? And is that a need to resort to using personal attacks to add weight to your argument?

If you've miscontrued my meaning, feel free to clarify. Making personal attacks and quoting your own inferences as my statements serves to benefit no one.

Nope. Go8 research publication track records. UQ = part of interuniversity effort for cervical vaccine. There are many international research collaborations going on between those universities. WHO is involved in some research with them....

And what has NUS and NTU inspired internationally lately? Nothing. I don't see them popping up much in HIGH IMPACT refereed journals (only alot in ****ty ones which I can't even use) ..... even Hongkong and Taiwanese universities pops up in my area of public health more than NUS ... oh the shame of it all. I was thinking Singapore is so advanced BUT they have not published anything other than ...what? SARS? overdone... of course , I am speaking in terms of my area.

NUS in no. 30 ...ok lah ...take it as a compliment . NTU in the top 100 is a big freaking joke when it has limited faculties.

And let's talk about potential bias here...slot in international high impact refereed journals and watch the rankings roll. THEN we talk. I can publish crap under faculty name and still count it towards citation ...easily skewed. Which student or lecturer likes to complain about the university when even in Singapore voters can be tracked via voting paper? LOL ....maybe 1 or 2 but definitely not the majority.

Going to an unknown university and getting a higher salaried job .....now that requires entrepreneurship and some originality...something sorely lacking in the rote learning system of Singapore. When there are 'learning modules' called teaching 'creative thinking' and 'how to date' , you know something is wrong with the system.

Who say you need to be No. 100 just because you are from an unknown university.....No.1 universities will confer all sorts of honorary crap degrees on you if you get as rich as Bill Gates , Rupert Murdoch etc...

Moral of the story: Money talks. Degrees don't.
