Well, if it's a 5870 CF, then again someone will ask why not put up against a GTX 295 SLI ?
So to us it was quite logical that to choose the fastest card SKU from each camp. I know you're coming from a very technical viewpoint, but we're looking more on the positioning and range comparison as it's a more balanced approach considering performance, positioning, segment and price.
As for drivers, to tell you the truth, even launched drivers are sometimes not 'mature' enough. Why is that so? We've been testing and retesting cards every now and then it can be seen that the performance impact has 2 profiles:- either they don't improve at all, or they gradually improve all the time. So whichever the case, we've to step in sometime before we get to run the comparison. This is one such article we did not long ago on driver progressions:-

It's been a few weeks since the launch of the cards and AMD hasn't yet gotten an official driver out - that's too bad for them. It should be ready upon launch, else we'll take whatever it is to run the card. After all, they are officially retailing the card, so it's no longer a beta product. We can't wait for the best of these moments, else the best time to compare is actually at the end of their lifecycle when they are finally mature enough, heh.
I hope you understand our concerns as well and no way we meant to give anyone an unfair advantage. The outcome is pretty reasonable with merits for each side. We planned the article sometime ago and we've to get it going with reasonable circumstances and move on to other products/matters of concern.
Cheers,
Vijay.

first of all, the drivers for the 5000 series cards are yet to reach maturity as such performance would sure to improve.
secondly, since gtx295 is a dual gpu card wouldn't it be fairer to CF the 5870 and do a review on that?
