most branded desktops comes with psu and gfx card that are underpowered for the same price.

MAking gaming tough. They like to emphasize 1GB of VGA ram which does not really help much if the gpu is weak.

I feel branded systems are more worth it for commercial usage as there are no need for hardware upgrades unlike hardcore gamers

I am into branded PCs. Look what is inside. They are CPUs made by Intel or AMD. Gfx most probably using nVidia or ATi which are most probably identical to manufacturers such as ASUS, Palit, HIS etc since they are using reference board.

Price wise, large manufacturers price their product competitive. They are not there to charge you higher price due to their higher manufacturing cost but rather their purchasing power ability to lower their buying price.

For example, they most probably buy Windows Vista Business edition for US$50 while we need to spend like US$100 or more for the same product. How about WD 2TB Green. You would be paying US$199 while they can get it for US$139 or even lower.

A lot of people don't do price comparison properly. They fail to calculate the value or warranty and support and of course, most people don't include OS as a comparison.

You are right in your logic.

But i always found branded pcs are better for commercial purposes due to warranty and tech issues. Also, for your relative. You DO NOT WANT to go down to their house every weekend and help the solve problems and get a cup of coke in return.

Im sure some of your know what i mean.

depends lor. if u care abt convenience + u don't know how to troubleshoot urself + u wanna pay by instalment all those then i think branded is a better option.

but one thing i have always wondered though: why can't OEMs make more balanced computers? i almost facepalm when my frnds's dell xps came with a i5 proc but a gt220.

maybe they use shared memory on board graphic.

but at times if u just need a workstation desktop, seems branded is quite a good deal cos it seems almost everything in for a good price.

DIY lose out at times for a basic system could well be the OS cost

Noob about pc stuffs --> branded
Don't buy DIY systems from shops, usually they give the most cheapo stuffs especially casing and PSU.

If know the stuffs well and know what to get --> DIY

If friends/relative ask for help --> 90% of the time I would say branded, got problem call help line don't call me. Had enough of unpleasant experiences.

Using branded computer mean you cannot overclock, mod or just simple upgrade the component inside without voiding the warrantty. However DIY is troublesome if you do not really know what you are doing.

Home made vs convenient store lunch box, you pick

Branded model of PC have a lot of restriction on hardware , not to mention the super lousy power supply which comes with it that is the cancer of the system . Imagine you want to upgrade your graphic card to ATI 4870 , your branded pc power supply will not pack enough juice to power it up ( or for long before it up the lorry) .
