Pipo M7 Pro 3G Review---Updated 13 Oct 2013

Though I only had it for a week, it has so far been an amazing tablet for the price..for those interested or who are looking for an alternative tablet to major global brand ones, take a look at this baby.
Here’s my review of my new toy, Pipo M7 Pro 3G….by no means is this comprehensive, or expertly done, however I will be updating as I spend more time playing with it…in fact, too much time that I am neglecting my other duties.

Pipo…Who!?

Pipo M7 Pro 3G Review

Specifications and features...you can refer to these links below, a very comprehensive overview of key features of this amazing tablet.

From Pipo website – in chinese,
产å“*展示--å“*铂科技

from Tabletsprint – in english,
PIPO M7 PRO - QUAD CORE 16GB - 8.9 INCH 1900X1200 DISPLAY - BLUETOOTH - BUILT-IN GPS - AUGUST 1ST PRODUCT LAUNCH - TabletSprint

I bought the 3G white version – set menu 1 @ 1,429 yuan , from the Tmall reseller below…he has excellent ratings, plenty of positive feedbacks and reviews, and highest transaction volume of all. I believe he ships overseas as well, though its mentioned free shipping, I doubt it applies to overseas shipping…but you can check.
To save me the hassle, I used an forwarder/agent, Hirakawa, who did the ordering and everything else for me...excellent service, prompt response and reliable , hence highly recommended. Delivery took a bit longer than usual...7 business days, from the day shipment arrived at Hirakawa’s warehouse. My package arrived with everything in order and correct, and most importantly, the tablet wasn’t a dud.
Shipping and delivery costs S$30 for the 2 kg package.
Total paid is S$325..which is not bad with all those accessories.
Reseller Link: ( rate was then 4.85 for me )

http://xhcxsm.tmall.com/shop/view_shop.htm?spm=a221p.5847809.0.0.BbqV6E&user_number_id=1040719034

Agent Hirakawa link:

Another reliable agent, with cheap rates I would use as well in future, but currently he is overwhelmed, so response can be quite slow...anyway, bookmarked.

Package delivered:
Here’s my package opened…underneath those accessories is the Pipo Box bubble wrapped.

P1070037.jpg

Here are the accessories with the set menu 1…. starting clockwise - HDMI cable, black leather case, tablet stand, TF card reader, capacitative pen, cleaning cloth, fish bone winder, and USB Lan adapter.

P1070038.jpg

Inside the Pipo box are the standard accessories...charger on the left, the rest still wrapped up are the OTG cable, USB cable, and ear phones, with chinese manual and warrranty card.

P1070042.jpg

Heres the Pipo M7 Pro 3G white version…you can see the protective plastic mask still pasted( with sticker ) yet to be peeled off, underneath this, is the protective screen already thoughtfully applied.

P1070057.jpg

Build quality is excellent and solid, not flimsy at all. It doesn’t feel like its going to fall apart holding it with only one hand at one end, and unlike the Note 8.0, twisting it a little doesn’t warp it the slightest . It is about 10mm at its thickest, not exactly a thin beauty like the Xperia Z tablet, or the iPad.
It does feels heavier than the advertised 410g, and with a digital scale, I can confirm the weight to be 488g! For comparisons,
iPad mini at 312g
Samsung Note 8.0 at 345g
Sony Xperia Z tablet at 495g
iPad at 652g
Screen:

Pipo's marketing:
"In the current market, although many types of China Tablet PC, but the tablet size choices for consumers, but not rich. For example 16:10 widescreen, generally only 7-inch, 10.1-inch two specifications. The 8-inch, 9.7-inch products are mainly denominated in a 4:3 square screen. However, unlike the vast majority of tablet computers are different, PiPOM7pro uses a very special Samsung 8.9-inch PLS screen.

PLS screen with IPS screen technology principle is the same, the liquid crystal molecules belong to the deflection theory using the plane to get wide angle screen technology. However, due to M7pro using this screen into the latest technology developed by Samsung Electronics, the screen display is better than the other 8.9-inch IPS screen even better! In the realization of the screen 400 nits high brightness while, the screen contrast ratio up to 900:1 (compared with other 8.9-inch IPS screen 800:1), the screen response speed Geng Shibi other 8.9-inch IPS screen more than 1 times faster response time only is 16ms (compared to other 8.9-inch IPS screen 32ms)."

The FHD screen is gorgeous…sharp images with no visible pixels, colours are vibrant and most importantly, no dead pixels…and yes, its the very same panel that is used in the Kindle Fire HD 8.9, a Samsung PS panel. Viewing angles are excellent. And I prefer this 16:10 aspect ratio.
However the brightness is not what you might expect at full. Personally, I find it quite comfortable at around 60% setting...plus it helps conserve battery power and prolong usage.
Outdoor viewing, on a bright sunny afternoon, is rather difficult, solely because the protective screen is just too reflective. Its like trying to watch your shiny flat panel tv on a sunny afternoon placed next to the window.
I find the screen still very responsive even with the thick protective mask plastic still on the tablet. And the quality glass screen gives the tablet its sturdiness…G+G - could it be gorilla glass?

PipoGGglass.png

Heres a screen capture of the display
Screenshot_2013-08-28-18-56-11.png

One gripe..the panel wasn’t centred properly within the white bezel borders…its shifted slightly to the left by 1mm as seen in the pic below. Anyway its just a minor aesthetic problem.
P1070059.jpg

The tablet does not come pre-rooted, and kernel version dated July 2013. I upgraded to the latest stock ROM (19 Aug 2013) from Pipo website, just to make sure it is up to speed and at its optimum… and then did the Antutu benchmark…not bad!
Screenshot_2013-08-28-19-09-03.png

Browser:
Preloaded with Chrome…its pretty snappy, dependent on your internet connection. Even with the page still loading, I am still able to scroll, and even pan around, zoom in ,etc without any lag. Chrome seems to work very well this time with android 4.2.2 OS.
Audio & Video:
Very smooth video playback for even HD videos so far, with no stuttering.
Though the speakers are back facing, they still sound loud and clear.
The speaker audio from music files is surprisingly loud at full volume , same with youtube videos . Compared with the bigger size 720p and 1080p videos I played..its definitely softer but still audible at full vol, however the smaller size rmvb, xvid video files are just as loud as the music files. So could it be due to the video format and audio encoding??
I think the sound from tablet and laptop speakers generally dont sound that great, especially at high volume anyways, but with earphones, its world of difference...the sound quality is superb, and loud too. Whether using a "2 striped jack" or "3 striped jack" earphones, both sound equally good and loud ...even my cheap brandless "2 striped jack" earphones sounds loud and clear.

Wifi:
For reference, I used my iPhone 4s to test WIfi signal strength alongside the M7 Pro, with 2 different wireless routers. ( do note that the wifi icon in iPhone has only 3 bar, whereas the M7 Pro has 4 bars; distance means from the router )
a. Starhub standard issued CISCO wireless router DPC3925..

Same room @ 3m - tablet 3-4 bar, iphone 3 bar
1 concrete wall @ 5m – tablet 2-3 bar, iphone 3 bar @7 m – tablet 1-2 bar, iphone 2bar
2 concrete walls @ 6m - tablet 2 bar, iphone 2 bar @7m - tablet 1bar, iphone2 bar
3 concrete walls @ 7m - tablet 0 reception, iphone 1 bar.

b. Asus RT-N66U ( a better router with good wifi range )

The router is situated on the 2nd storey in a room at the front of the house.
2 concrete walls @ 11m - tablet 2-3 bar, iphone 2 bar.
1st floor dining room at middle of house @ 11m – tablet 2-3 bar, iphone 2 bar. Adjacent kitchen, separated by another concrete wall, - tablet 1-2 bar, iphone 1 bar.

Conclusion: From my tests, the wifi reception for this tablet seems good, however the iphone 4S wifi reception is still better...where the tablet lost reception , the iPhone managed to maintain internet connection at 1 bar. As seen above, a good router can increase your wifi range.

Battery: (Note: wifi and location access turned ON throughout this testing..)

Battery is rated at 6300mAH. Charging the tablet requires the supplied wall charger...about 5 hours from low to fully charged.
USB charging not supported.

Battery life is quite good, as shown below during the period of testing, benchmarking, etc with wifi & location access ON the whole time.
Screenshot_2013-08-28-19-07-00.png

Heres a capture showing rate of battery drain,...some intermittent tablet activity in between...with tablet on standby wifi & location access ON the whole time...quite good

Screenshot_2013-08-28-23-42-10.png

The next day on waking up, standby overnight, with both wifi and location access ON...

Screenshot_2013-08-29-08-04-25.png

Fully charged with continuous use, with Wifi and Location access ON,

Screenshot_2013-09-01-21-24-24.png

GPS:
GPS Test app was used. The test was done in an open space HDB carpark . Once the GPS Test app finished loading, on a good day, the 1st satellite in view is displayed almost instantaneously, and with more satellites in view, locking on usually ranges from 5 to 15 seconds on average. However, on another day same location, 6 satellites came into view, and yet it took almost a minute before tablet can lock on presumably due to the weak signals, as seen in below pics. I assume the flats around could be be the reason, since buildings and trees can block the satellite signal.
GPS Test at open space HDB carpark:
6 satellites in view,

Screenshot_2013-09-01-19-25-04.png

lock on achieved after a minute
Screenshot_2013-09-01-19-33-10.png

I tried the GPS in car, placing the tablet on my lap, and only 2 satellites that came into view, but lock on cannot be achieved . However when placed on the dash under the windscreen, the number of satellites in view almost instantly shot up to 7 or 8, enabling lock on, and the downloaded trial SYGIC navigation app worked beautifully with pinpoint accuracy.

Screenshot_2013-08-31-14-10-18.png

After experimenting over several days, I discovered that by placing near the edge of the front passenger seat under the windshield in clear view of the sky, it was still sensitive to lock on in that position, in between 30secs to a min. Now I have my very own 8.9 inch screen GPS navigator with the help of the amazing Sygic app! ( and for the price of a tablet )
Currently, I am trying to figure out how and the best place to hang position this tablet.

I love this function, very useful for finding your way around especially when overseas, and importantly when internet connection is not available.

Pipo M7 Pro 3G Review

3G SIM card slot & TF card slot:

3G SIM card slot is a mini (normal ) SIM card slot. This is only for data only, so the tablet cannot make voice calls like a mobile.
Frequency: This tablet supports WCDMA SIM card
HSPA/WCDMA: 2100/900MHz
GSM/GPRS/EDGE Quad band:850/900/1800/1900
3G download speed maximum 7.2M bit/s, upload maximum: 5.76M bit/s

The cards sits recessed in the slot after inserting...so they do not protrude out.
However, it can be a challenge to insert and remove the cards, as one needs to push deeper in to activate the spring catch...unless one has long fingernails.
I found it easier to use another disused SIM card or similar for this purpose.

Tested out with a Starhub mobile broadband SIM card, and it worked like a charm.
Once autodetected by the tablet, you are good to surf when a triangular icon shows up at the top right corner - 4 full bars. Great!

Screenshot_2013-09-01-13-59-01.png

Likewise, for the micro SD card …can verify under settings/storage. Supports up to 32GB, though 64GB was reported to work…unfortunately don’t have one to test out.

OTG cable:

Connects to host USB port, for use with 3G dongle, thumb drive, portable HDD, keyboard, etc.
a. 3G dongle – be warned, only compatible ones will work.
I tried 2 Huawei dongles, and only 1 worked, model K3765, the other model E180 did no.
b. Thumbdrives and powered external HDD worked
c. My 500GB external USB HDD (without power) did not work.

HDMI output to TV:

I was happy to discover that with just the HDMI cable, I can get video output as well as audio output to the TV!

Camera:

Some snaps taken with the tablet camera…

The bundled Pipo earphones sound as good as it looks, with its unique flat ribbon wiring….

IMG_20130901_132611.jpg

Video taken was not too bad either.

VID_20130901_131942.mp4 Video by koochiepoochie | Photobucket

PDF Annotation:

I found the bundled pen wasn’t as good as the Samsung stylus pen I have tried…nevertheless it’s a challenge trying to write neatly with the pen or finger. Perhapsit requires more practice…
Heres my attempt using the pen..its tough since you cant rest your hand on the tablet

Pipo M7 Pro 3G Review

Its been weeks of usage, and so far, this MIC tablet hasn’t failed to disappoint me. In fact it has surpassed my expectations...price, specs, and performance.

So, I have updated to the latest Pipo stock rom ( Sep 2013 ), and did some retesting. Very interesting results!!

Antutu Benchmark ver 4 – an impressive 19340!

Screenshot_2013-09-16-18-10-59.png

Wifi:
From my previous post #2:
Starhub standard issued CISCO wireless router DPC39253m
Same room @ 3m - tablet 3-4 bar, iphone 3 bar
1 concrete wall @ 5m – tablet 2-3 bar, iphone 3 bar @7 m – tablet 1-2 bar, iphone 2bar
2 concrete walls @ 6m - tablet 2 bar, iphone 2 bar @7m - tablet 1bar, iphone2 bar
3 concrete walls @ 7m - tablet 0 reception, iphone 1 bar.

Using the Wifi Analyser, I seem to be getting better Wifi reception.
Beside router, the best result by far! Anyway it fluctuates around the -30 plus range

Screenshot_2013-09-18-20-41-43.png

Same room, 3m from router:
Screenshot_2013-09-18-20-42-11.png

@5m, 1 concrete wall
Screenshot_2013-09-18-20-44-18.png

@7m, 1 wall:
Screenshot_2013-09-18-20-45-00.png

@6m, 2 concrete walls
Screenshot_2013-09-18-20-45-37.png

@7m, 2 walls
Screenshot_2013-09-18-20-48-16.png

Conclusion: Wifi is good for this tablet…not sure if the improvement in reception is due to the latest stock rom, or my router acting up...I have no complaints.

Pipo M7 Pro 3G Review---Updated 13 Oct 2013

Sygic GPS Navigation app:

Sygic | GPS Navigation for Android and iPhone

With the proper data input, Sygic is able to plot and optimize a route to your destination. If a wrong turn is taken, it will replot , show and guide you back on the right path to your destination. There is turn by turn navigation with voice guidance as well.
It also has lane guidance as well (at crucial junctions , it comes up in a small box ), to show you which lane to be on, plus speed camera warnings, speed limit, etc.
I was able to get a fix in 21 secs once GPS Test app finished loading.

http://s437.photobucket.com/user/koochiepoochie/media/Pipo%20M7%20Pro%203G/PICT0003-2.mp4.html

Noting the position of the GPS antenna in the tablet, its best to face it with a clear path to the sky for best reception. You will get a faster lock on when the car is stationary.

PIPO M9pro GPS test from pipomall.com - YouTube

Here’s a really cheap but good and effective way of placing your tablet in the car. Check out the video here and the possibilities you can have with your tablet...

DIY iPad Car Mount - YouTube

The leather casing comes in handy to hook the tablet on the cord. The GPS antenna will now be on the upper left side, perfect for reception…..you can adjust the length of the cord to your preferred best position. Do note that GPS sucks a lot of battery juice….about 8% for half an hour usage with Sygic.
Besides the navigation app, be aware of other apps that request GPS location.

You can read more here:

GPS doesnt waste much battery? - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

Verdict:

So far, M7 Pro 3G has lived up to my expectations and satisfy my needs.
It has a nice balance between a good sized FHD screen and portablility - the size of a slightly bigger paperback and weighing at a not too heavy 488g,and a 8.9 in 16:10 FHD screen – with a great battery life, its ideal for reading and browsing on the go.
I find this M7 Pro 3G is a great buy for the price- costing significantly less than similar major global brand tablets, it offers impressive specs with a gorgeous FHD screen, good Wifi plus a GPS receiver to boot… a must have travelling companion to say the least. Already I dont leave home without it...my heavy laptop sits at home right now.

Great news! The creator of custom roms, Riley Roms, for many tablets has released the latest Rom 1.3 based on the latest Pipo stock Rom( 19 Aug 2013 )!

And heres a quote from him:
"Good news M7 Pro users, I just found out today that Geekbuying.com is sending me an M7 Pro to develop with, so look for continued support for this tablet. I'm very excited!!!!!

Indications from our factory sources are that Pipo doesn't plan on introducing any new models until after the first of the year...and since this one is the newest model, I'm sure they will continue to update the firmware for it....(maybe even to Android 4.3?).

Also, our art guru, Tattman65 is working on some crazy awesome new bootanimations for Freaktab ROM's...so stay tuned!!!!!!!! There will be lots more in the future for the M7 Pro!!!!!!!!"

Also, Pipo will be releasing a new ROM..tonight apparently..:s12:

Check out the link:

So how much space is actually reserved for installing programs and games? Assuming it's a 16gb model..

Hi Snoopydog,

Thanks for the review.

By the way, I read from somewhere that 3G connection is not so stable. Did you encounter similar problem?

The M7 Pro currently is only available with 2 GB Ram , 16 GB storage, and a micro SD card slot which supports up to 32GB ( some reported 64 GB working)..so you can choose to install onto your card.

I am not sure what you want to know...anyway, heres a capture of the storage after restoring to original stock rom( rom august 2013 ) Hope this helps :)

Hi Snoopydog,

Thanks for the review.

By the way, I read from somewhere that 3G connection is not so stable. Did you encounter similar problem?

Are you referring to the dongle connected via OTG cable or the 3G Sim card slot? 3G signal was good...I got consistent 4 bars on average so far though tested only for 10 mins or so, just to make sure everything works. Check back for updates on my review...I am still exploring :)

What Just Me wanted to know was how much of the 16gb is set aside for apps. Unlike Sony, Samsung etc, most MIC tablets partition their memory into an apps portion and the balance for general storage. From your screen grab above, the apps portion (called "Internal Storage") is 2gb and the balance (called "Nand Flash") is ard 12.5gb. The "missing" 1.5gb is used for system apps
