Thanks. Current plan sg to meleca-kl-penang-hatyai-bkk-somewhere Thailand-Cambodia-vietnam. Advise to go to China? Need to find flight back also. Currently flight back from hanoi about 150.
Still keen on trains? Visited the site yet?

Malacca is inconvenient going by train. Butterworth has the nearest train station to Penang island. Georgetown is only a short ferry ride away from the Butterworth station though. The line to Cambodia ends abruptly at the border town of Aranyaprathet/Poipet. There is no proper train service spanning Cambodia from this town to Vietnam. You can travel the length of Vietnam from HCM City to Hanoi, and thereon to Nanning. Scoot serves Nanning.

Have you checked the temperature for China? You wanna carry your winter wear (and not use it) until you arrive in China?

Can travel by either bus or train. Whichever more convenient and cheaper I guess. Will bus to malacca and then bus to kl. Not too sure whether want stay in Vietnam not. Been to hcm and hanoi before but never been to Cambodia before.

Ya maybe will just stick to SEA. Currently cheapest air ticket back to sg is from hanoi. Any other budget airline fly back from sg nearby?

If you wanna skip Vietnam, you can cross the border from Cambodia to Laos. From Laos, you can cross border again to Thailand or Yunnan. Or back to North Vietnam at Dien Pien Phu. From there you can head back to Hanoi for your flight or visit Sapa first. There is another border crossing near Sapa (Lao Cai) to Yunnan. Many possibilities.

There are quicker trains like the new sleeper which takes about 15 hours.

Definitely feasible with 18 days, even if you ride all the way to Nanning. Some segments are not joined by train though. Note that a change of train is required at Gemas to proceed towards KL. I returned from Thailand via Sungai Kolok-Rantau Panjang so I did not have to repeat the Padang Besar route.

Visit seat61.com.
So do you take train from pasir mas to Larkin?
Nite train,rite?

There is no station in Larkin. Back then there was direct day service to Woodlands from Wakaf Bharu. I had stayed the night in Kota Bharu after crossing the border at Sungei Panjang/Rantau Panjang. The only direct train option now appears to be ERT27 which is a sleeper. However, with this timing, the scenic "jungle" segment takes place during the night.
