I thought the Xperia X Compact [F5321] deserves its own thread.

The major features (or the lack of) as quoted from xperiablog.com

The Xperia X Compact has a 4.6-inch 720p display (282 PPI pixel density and screen-to-phone ratio of 69.57%) with Corning Gorilla Glass...

The Xperia X Compact uses a Snapdragon 650 (MSM8956) chipset with hexa-core processor and Adreno 510 graphics...

The Xperia X Compact has no dust/water resistance...

The Xperia X Compact only has a 1/3.06-inch 5MP front-facing camera (22mm wide-angle lens F2.0), versus a 13MP camera used in the Xperia XZ...

The Xperia X Compact does not support 4K video recording...

The Xperia X Compact has a 2700mAh battery (the XZ has a 2900mAh battery)...

Sony has used the same triple image sensing technology found in the Xperia XZ within the Xperia X Compact, this means there is lazer autofocus and RGBC-IR sensor. The Xperia X Compact has a 1/2.3-inch 23MP Exmor RS rear camera (24mm G Lens / F2.0)

It has USB Type-C™ connector and available in Universe Black, stylish White and calming Mist Blue. Expected to be released for sale in September 2016.

If only Sony SG can be as "passionate" as their Taiwan counterpart.

Check their promo gig here.

It cannot be helped, a lot of western influence on our locals.
So they tend to prefer what the westerners like, fruity or sammy phones.

Sony still not selling very well here, compared to Taiwan or Hong Kong.

I don't understand why they need to have a low/mid tier phone,

Other than to make their other phones look better and to price them higher

If they spend less resources on such low end phones and just focus on a few, perhaps those few phones can have better specs or a lower pricing and maybe, more buyers

Cater for different consumers, simple as that. Not everyone is specs hungry and wish to pay more than 1000 for a phone. Some just want a mid tier phone.
