i have it. I bought betaine hcl, and apple cider vinegar supps to cope with it. Contrary to many belief, low stomach acid are usually the cause of GERD. I am suspecting i have hiatal hernia now though, will continue with the supps and some physical manipulation.

whats your symptoms?

I had a heart-burn like symptoms, literally around specific chest areas. I thought it was a series of mini heart attack until doc suggests its otherwise. It occurred at random time for a short burst amount of time. What I did:
1. Omeprazole (Doc's prescription)
2. Reduce coffee intake (Doc's advice)
3. Make sure I have at least 1.5 hours gap between last meal and sleep
4. Stopped taking casein before sleep (In addition of point no 3) - not sure if casein even affects acid reflux
After 1 month it got much better and then slowly reducing the dosage of omeprazole until you dont need one.
Occasionally comes back when stress level from work is too high or doing dirty bulk

Hi Teckgamer,

Thanks for your postings.

I had been told by the ENT doc that I had acid reflux after he had done an endoscope test. He has prescribed the PPI or Proton Pump inhibitor treatment or 3 type of medicines.
Apparently, now I realised I could have suffered for years from GERD without realising it. It happens to older folks normally when the valve or lower esophageal sphincter (LES)fails to function properly, allowing gastric juices to travel back from the stomach into the esophagus and cause troublesome symptoms or complications. Main symptoms could include heartburn, sour/ bitter taste in mouth, chest pain or discomfort, sleep disturbances, sore throat or hoarness in throat, shortness of breath, abdominal pain as well.

I have been told by the doc to adopt life style changes that includes
1) no food or water 3 hrs before bed time
2) small and regular meals in between
3) not to wear tight fitting clothings
4) raising the head of the bed by few inches if possible
5) avoid chocolates, coffee and tea, fatty and fried food, garlic and onions, etc

I wonder if you guys out there have experienced it before . Do see your doctor if possible. Happy eating and living. Keep yourself in good health.

Cheers!

Hi Paul,

My condition is slighlty different from you. Mine is hoarseness of voice for 5 years. And also the typical heartburn symptoms occassionally. And I have been taking omeprazole, esomeprazole (nexium), etc, but it does not seem to relieve my voice problem.

But my condition, seems very weird. Whenever I feel hungry or empty stomach, the voice quality seems to deteriorate, or become hoarseness. Not sure whether it is due to reflux..

I'm also like you, seen many doctors, ENT specialists, Gastroenterologists, Upper GI and Bariatric surgeons,

Did a 24 Hr Esophageal impedance pH test, and results show that 52% of my reflux occurences are non-acidic and 48% are acidic.
That is why the gastric medications (PPI) did not help me much as PPI only solve the acid reflux portion.

Have been considering to do anti-reflux surgery to tighten the LES, to stop stomach contents from flowing back to the esophagus. The surgeon in CGH has offered me the surgery, but cautioned me that the surgery may stop heartburn permanenetly, but voice hoarseness may not be cured.

What are your insights about this? Thanks

Am suffering from bloat for a Long time. I only went to see a specialist after it hurt for more than 2 weeks. Did scope and ultrasound to find that it's nothing serious and just got a lot of acid and air inside. Not sure why my stomach produces so much acid and air.

Hi,
Thank you for your posting.
As to whether it is good to proceed with surgery to tighten the LES,since the surgeon said it may not guarantee a solution for the sore throat, then there is no point in doing the surgery. If you can manage the Gerd symptoms via medications n life styles changes, then it is good. This is just my personal opinion.
Best also to seek a second opinion from good surgeons or doctors to best treat or manage the conditions.
Take care.

Can do a scope to find out if you have hiatal hernia. What physical manipulation do you mean? Does apple cider really help with GERD/LPR?

I used to have it many years back and even went for 3 scopes due to medication not effective. Mine is due to stress and eating too fast. I get pain all the time after meal.

I then sign up for a foot massage package and after more than 10 sessions I kind of feel much better, maybe the massage did help to cure or maybe it reduced my stress I do not know plus I did not continue the medication as it is too costly. As of now I am completely cured. Maybe is coincident but this is my experience

Can skip the physical part, didn't really do it. Apple cider or betsine hcl helps with digesting the food you eat particuarly meat, amaylse is used to digest carbohydrates which usually causes many problem to GERD

I'm quite curious, how does eating fast leads to damage to the LES?

What if the damage has been done to the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), and does correcting these habits helps?

As reflux is due to the weakness of the LES, allowing the backflow of acid.

If damage has been done, changing lifestyle habits will it help?

Of course, will also seek opinions from experienced laryngologist to see if it is due to LPR..

But have you heard of pepsin reflux before? It is non-acid type of reflux which causes many LPR patients.

Hi
LPR is Gerd without the heartburn symptom. And it's difficult to diagnose.
If you would like a recommendation of a good ent doc , please pm me.
We can discuss more on this Gerd or LPR issues.
Cheers!

eating fast should be fine, but because you don't chew the food enough, it will be harder to digest the chunks in your stomach.

i am not sure if LES will ever recover, I am just trying to supplement with enough acid to my stomach like ACV, Betaine HCL, other digestive aids like Amylase & Protease. What happen usually with my weak LES is because, theres not enough stomach acid to digest the food properly. When i take enough acid, i can get through lifting without any reflux symptoms.
