Hi i recently upgraded my M1 plan from 300mbps to 500mbps. I was told by customer service that I do not need to change the modem, only my current router. Can I check if there is some sort of customer firmware that allow my N56U to 500mbps ? or I need to buy a new one? Thanks.

N56u wouldn't be able to support good wireless speed as its limited to wireless N.

If u have no wireless AC device now, then no point changing also..

If wired only, N56U is more than capable of 500Mbps. In fact it can handle gigablt wan to lan with no issues.

I am using wired by still only getting max of 300 mbps in speedtest. Do i need to change the ONT modem going from 300mbps to 500mbps?

No need to change ONT. During Peak hour your speed will drop. Try to do a test during non-peak.

Nope. RT N56U has gigabit LAN ports, you will get close to gigabit speeds via wired connection provided there isn't any wrong with your cables or PC.

Which speed test website ? And which test server ?

Some hard figures to prove that 800Mbps isnt a problem.

is there any settings i need to adjust ? does custom firmware like pandavn helps boost?

It should work regardless stock or custom firmware. Confirm whether M1 is indeed supplying 500 Mbps to your house first.

1) Connect from ONT to PC directly to verify.
2) If direct connection can achieve speed, factory reset the router can do a fresh config ( maybe a firmware update can help too )

Although the router is old, it has received numerous firmware updates - try updating it first.

I'm still using the N56U and AC56U in the house; works perfectly fine.

Nothing to do with broadband provider, unless of course your service isn't yet running on the updated broadband speed.
