It is the Golden Age of Piracy. Renegade captains command the most powerful weapons on Earth: warships. In Skull & Bones™, you are an insatiable, upstart pirate captain who has refused the king’s pardon. Having nothing to lose, you sailed from the Caribbean to the Indian Ocean, an exotic and untamed frontier full of lavish riches.

However, these rich and idyllic waters are also a battleground where far-reaching colonial empires, powerful trading corporations, and ruthless pirate gangs are fiercely competing for their share of these valuable treasures.

During your journey to become the ultimate pirate kingpin, you will build a fleet of ships you can customize, prey upon lucrative trade routes, and take down rival pirate captains, memorable characters, or other players. In order to survive in this ruthless ocean, you will have to ally with other pirate captains to form the most influential pirate gang, becoming too big to fail and joining the endless struggle for supremacy of the Indian Ocean.

If you notice, the gameplay mechanics is very very similar to Assassin's Creed: Black Flag.

Black Flag was very well received after all. But they did not want to use the AC name all the time for a pirate focused game. That is why they diversified that element from there. Go ahead and compare. You have the side cannons, then you have the top down circular type that you fire with devastating effect and more. But... you cannot jump to the enemy ship they want it to specifically be a ship to ship battle. Travels will all be done on the ship too btw.

I think it is great that they are taking something that people like in Black Flag and incorporating it into its own game. Enjoy.

I see this degenerating into Division's dark zone. Just let the opponents do all the work, getting themselves badly damaged in the process, and then just go in to rob the robbers for all the loots.

All i can say is, enjoy the game! It might look same as black flag but if you actually played the demo, it is definitely different and very refreshing!

Looks promising, but still limited by player control of only 1 ship. :(

I remembered playing the naval battles in Black Flag and Freedom Cry, and had to fight off 3 man-of-wars with only 1 ship.

Anyone remember the pirate game "Port Royal"? At least it allowed player control of up to 7 ships, and evened the odds against mass opposition.

One of Ubisoft's big reveals at E3 this summer was the pirate naval warfare game Skull & Bones. We played it at E3 and came away generally impressed. And on a recent trip to developer Ubisoft Singapore's studio we had the opportunity to speak with creative director Justin Farren, who worked on Gears of War and Madden before joining Ubisoft. He also produced Assassin's Creed Unity, Black Flag, and Syndicate in Singapore.

Our conversation covers a number of topics, including why Skull & Bones is a new IP instead of an Assassin's Creed game, the possibility of a Switch version, and how the game uses the power of the Xbox One X. Farren also told us there will be loot boxes, but the game will take steps to avoid a pay-to-win scenario. Additionally, we asked about the mysterious single-player mode, and Farren confirmed the game will offer ... something for fans in this department, though it's still unclear how this may work.

Our interview, condensed and edited for clarity, follows below.
