I am planning a trip to Cambodia and I would appreciate if anyone can give me a few pointers on cambodia:

1) difference between siam reap airport and phnom Penh airport

2) no uber there. So how to move around safely?

3) famous places to visit? Any places with strong recommendations

4) recommended accomodation places

5) local practices and hazards - use usd? Scams? Language barriers? Other things to take note? Use of wireless reliable? Or better to get overseas router?

Any advice appreciated. Thanks..

Flying there soon...
Not much places to venture around in phnom penh ...
airport transfer @ 12usd (lexus), 10usd (tuk tuk)

booked a day tour :
4 hours @ 25usd (lexus), 20usd (tuk tuk)
6 hours @ 35usd (lexus), 25usd (tuk tuk)
8 hours @ 50usd (lexus), 30usd (tuk tuk)

Hotel prices relatively cheap compared to bangkok ...
would expect phnom penh to be similiar to hcm ...

Scams:
(A) Police scam - avoid people saying they are police (fake police)
(B) Visa scam - they would ask about ur visa , etc
(c) same country scam - Someone approach you ask where u from ... Then they will say they have a sister working there, then chit chat with u ... etc

(d) milk scam - they partner with the store seller . You help them buy milk powder. Then they would return back to the seller and get cash.

If your stomach is not strong, eat only at restaurants. For me, I can eat at the market but cooked food.
So long the food is cooked hot and you can see it being cooked, it is pretty safe to eat.
Just stay away from large crowds gathering in the streets as sometimes could be some protests.

Don't give money to children beggars, or children selling post cards. They are being exploited by their parents. Schooling is not compulsory in Cambodia so if their parents see kids bringing money in, they will never go to school, and will forever be uneducated. Do your best to say no to those dole eyes.

Many Cambodians are desperately poor. 1-2 dollars is no big deal to us but could mean the family eats or goes hungry. Average income is US$3+ a day, which means there are many people who make even less than that. This is the reality of poor countries.

If you don't want to give money, maybe try to make the kids happy by giving them candy or buying them a soft drink. They love cold drinks on a hot day as they cannot afford them on their own. Obviously, you can only do this if there are aren't many kids around.

for sharing :

Just came back from phnom penh ...

tuk tuk is the most common transport in pp ...
just like hcm, many motor bikes ... they come in everywhere ...

booked a driver in pp ...
toyota highlander, big boot, can put few luggages
price is 12usd one way from airport to hotel (town area) ...
we also booked 6 hours day tour by his car @ 35 usd ...

the place is very dusty, better to book a car rather than tuk tuk ...

Things in PP are much mroe expensive in Signapore ...

The bigger mall is aeon ...
Expect to pay 3usd to 4usd on average for a meal (rice or noodle) at food court
More expensive than what I have expected ...

The things at the supermarket is at least 10% more expensive than in Singapore. Peel Fresh 1 litre, is about 2.20 usd or 3sgd .. here is only 2.50sgd
Coffee , like old town, price is 6.50usd or 9+sgd ... here is only 6+sgd

No macdonalds there ...
only burger king, kfc , yoshinoya, swensens, etc
2pc kfc chicken meal is 4.80usd or about 7sgd ...
3pc kfc chicken meal is 6.80usd or 9+ sgd

we were advised by our driver not to eat the street food...
our stomach wont be able to take it ...

How much do you expect to realistically bargain over a USD3 tuk-tuk ride?

Basically don't give money to people who beg. Is ok to spend money buying stuff from them. I mean even you don't support by buying, they will still be there with less money and things won't be any better.
Taxi and tuktuk are tentatively safe. Tuktuk need to negotiate rates.
Food wise, similar to anywhere in the world. Just Ensure you eat cooked food and food that a lot locals eat.

Personal advice, don't bring white clothes, since as mentioned it's very dusty. Your clothes will end up yellowish.

For accommodation in SR, just stay within walking distance to Pub Street.

Then lastly for attractions in SR, if you want to take good pictures, you need to plan accordingly (e.g. time, order or visit) especially for sunrise. If you will just follow the advice of the tuk-tuk driver, you will end up joining loads of Chinese tour buses.

i agree.. the road is very dusty.. so i suggest taking an air-conditioned car instead of tuk tuk for long trips to the angkor wat and especially the tonle sap..
things there are expensive because payment is based on USD! so nego your prices properly..

take tuk tuk for airport transfer or day tour is not recommended ...
very dusty and very dangerous ...
people ride on their bike would just snatch away your bags ...
