Surprisingly acceptable in spite of negative reviews online (maybe ang moh perception different). Price reasonable.

Ropatini's Homestay B & B @Fox Glacier. BF included.
Expensive but good BF.

Te Wanaka Lodge @Wanaka. BF included.
Price reasonable and good BF.

Distinction Luxmore @Te Anau. No BF
Tourist place with many mainland tourists. But in heart of town.

Earnslaw Lodge @Queenstown. No BF.
Need to walk into town. Free parking (after all need to pay wherever you go in Queenstown).

The Hermitage @Mount Cook. No BF. Not many options here.
Expensive but no choice.

Lake Tekapo Scenie Resort. No BF.
Expensive but in heart of town.

Rendezvous Hotel @Christchurch before heading home. No BF.
High rise hotel but clean and comfy. Free parking. Can see how depressing Christchurch is after the quake. Jin sad place.

For food, yes. Otherwise, you will be eating salads from Countdown or Pak N Save. For places like Mt. Cook, Fox Glacier, no such big supermarkets. Greymouth and Queenstown are the only places I have seen got McDonald's or KFC if you are into that kind of food.

Is parking going to an issue in town? Can i drive to town for dinner before heading back to ulu accommodation?

It depends on which town.
Like Queenstown, limited parking spaces. Dunedin, plenty of spaces.
If I stay in motels with cooking facilities, I will normally cook. Queenstown is all ang mo jiak.
Dunedin got more food choices as it is a U town. Same for Christchurch, Auckland.
I normally stay outside of town due to limited parking spaces. Except in cities.

U can stay within the place. park yr car at yr hotel or apt. Walk around is nice.

Cooking saves alot of money too. Wifi is most stays needs to pay or jz free 200mb per stay. 200mb finish fast as sometimes their wifi is very slow:s8:

I don't think this is true of Queenstown where it is hard to find free parking spaces. I had to park a bit away from the city centre along the lakeside and walk back to my hotel in town.

Queenstown is a very compact town, not much parking spaces over there.
Te Anau, Wanaka, I stay about 10 minutes drive from food places, supermarket. Hotel are cheaper further away with free parking space.
Christchurch, Auckland, no free parking space from hotel, have to find own paid parking space and very expensive.
