I remember you're bringing your child along. Not sure if you'll be doing a lot of temple visits. You can consider some of the places below.

For Osaka:
- Osaka Kaiyukan
- USJ (there's Hello Kitty and Sesame Street characters)
- Tennoji Zoo
- Kidzania Osaka
- Lego Discovery Center

For Kyoto:
- Kyoto Railway Museum
- Kyoto City Zoo

Thanks for sharing. My child is quite big liao, almost legal age so maybe kidzania not suitable. I love to visit temples, 1 or 2 temples might b acceptable for her

So is it quite common to book hotels at those places n keep moving? Since 1st trip to Japan, I think I might not stretch too much n go so many places. I think at most 3 places

Usually people plan one day trip to Nara and another one for kobe. Kyoto is the one that some will book a lodging there to stay because it's difficult to discover Kyoto in just one day. But it all depends on your itinerary, whether how many days do you intend to spend in Kyoto.

For me I prefer to base in Kyoto and make day trips out from there because I dislike Osaka and day trips to osaka is OK for me as I don't have much places in osaka to visit. So it really depends on your itinerary.

Common. I used to move 3-4 times within Tokyo for previous two-week trips. Moved twice in Osaka trip.

Thought your child is still a little one. Probably USJ and Kaiyukan would be good for all ages. Perhaps shopping (Shinsaibashi, Namba and Umeda) would be more suitable for her.

Yes, can just base urself in either osaka or kyoto and make day trips out to other places.

I personally prefer staying in osaka, coz there is nothing much at night in kyoto. Day time go sightseeing in Kyoto, nara etc, night time come back to osaka for eating and shopping

The Tokyo earthquake thing has been going on for a while. That in terms of possibility is a touch higher than Lil Kim hitting Japan with a missile

Yup...

I usually monitor below sites when I have plans to go Japan:

http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake/
and
http://www.jma.go.jp/en/quake_tokai/info.html

wah both places im going next year... then how? should i postpone the buying of tickets till next year, jan?

No one can tell you when is a good time to buy the tickets because no one can predict when the big one will happen. We just know that it's long overdue. But that shouldn't stop one from planning a trip there. What you need to do is to buy travel insurance (one that covers natural disasters) right after you buy the airtickets. Since most insurance only allow you to buy 6 mths in advance, perhaps try not to buy airtickets any earlier than that if it's a concern to you.

If it happens a few mths before your trip, there's no need to cancel if it doesn't affect your hotel(s). If it affects some of the places in your itinerary, just amend your itinerary accordingly.

If it happens when you are there (touch wood), then just have to trust in Japan's buildings' earthquake code (assuming you are in the building when it happens) and just follow what the locals do...

Thanks but fully booked liao. Seems very popular cos even tried booking for Aug next year also full. I m going end Mar to early apr

Your dates are still a little early for booking. Japanese hotels tend to open up 3-6 months ahead of booking dates.

Try third party sites like Zuji, Expedia, Japanican or Rakuten Travel.

Hi
for my coming trip in Nov ... like to clarify some finer details to help in my planning ....
  • are there free wifi, usb charging ports in shinkansen?
  • will i be able to buy bento in shinkansen or is it better off to buy from shops at station?
  • can suica be used on shinkasen to make purchases?
  • am landing narita T2 @ 8am & trying to catch NEX then north bound shinkasen @ 9:48am. in between, I need to exchange JR pass, make advance booking for resort shirakami, buy suica card. so wondering if that's feasible?

thank you!

No Free Wifi. No USB charging port but iirc some seats have power socket.

They sell Bento on shinkansen, but recommend you buy from shop before boarding

I think Suica can be used, but why not just cash?

9:48 looks too tight. One plane of tiong before ur plane and you'll be stuck at immigration clearance for a good time. And JR office has been getting more and more crowded compared to say 5 yrs ago. High chance there is also a long queue there.
