Have you tried to raise a support ticket with Synology?

I presume that your array was in raid 1 before it went down.
You can try the steps in the link below.

Since the NAS is able to power w/o HDD, it is likely OK. Try to slot in 1 HDD in same position as previous and boot. If can't, power down and try the other HDD in other slot.

My 5TB disk before i upgraded from Toshiba 3TB (1 of my NAS)

thing is, i bought the disks from Amazon (no warranty to begin with).

If having HDD crash is a common thing on Synology, i would have bought local disks with warranty.

Synology is never compatible with REDs despite what others try to say. End of the day, we see more red crash than any other HDDs in the market.

This is a sad day for WD Red HDD owners. And ironically, vendors are still bundle Synology NAS with WD Red HDD at Sitex 2017 and past IT shows.

The uninformed buyers are likely to buy the bundle and suffer later.

higher margin.

5400-5900rpm HDD but more expensive than Toshiba 7200RPM.

Go figure how much they make per HDD.

higher margin.

Go figure how much they make per HDD.

Toshiba 7200rpm HDD:
4TB: $154
6TB: $257

WD Red 5400rpm HDD:
4TB: $194
6TB: $318

Difference:
4TB: $40
6TB: $61

Above prices is from @Tradepac.

Retailers are milking uninformed consumers all the while.
