Glass in general very prone to crack. Let’s go back to plastics.
Unfortunately, it would not be tenable for Samsung to do so.

If they reverted to plastic, every review will start saying how "premium" the iPhone feels vs Samsung, how "cheap" Samsung's flagship is... bla bla bla. Nobody will credit the plastic phone with being more durable; at most it'll be a side comment.

First Impressions are everything, no buyer is going to think that he or she will drop a glass-backed phone. Those with butter fingers will just get a tough case for the glass back.

Samsung is smart to stick to glass backs. Even Apple has now copied Samsung in using glass instead of metal for its flagship phones!

Glass material is used cos of wireless charging, and its premium feel.

Deathst is trying to insinuate that if users cannot take care of glass phones, then go back to plastic phones lor.. HAHAS :D

sorry for being camera noob....but what does variable aperture do?

does this mean the S9 lens is a zoom lens that changes aperture size when zooming???

so the current camera on all the Samsung phones are fixed aperture and zooming is done via software instead of hardware??

All mobile phones as far as I know use fixed aperture on cameras. Zooming is mostly software crop and stretch with the exception of telephoto lens with has a fixed zoom factor for 2x zoom. Any further is the result of software zoom on a 2x Lens

A camera’s aperture refers to the size of the opening through which light enters the camera and reaches the sensor. Aperture is measured in f-stops, a ratio of the focal length divided by the opening size. The smaller the f-stop, the wider the opening — allowing more light to reach the sensor.

So a variable aperture allows better light control based on the condition of the place.

It means the camera lens is able to toggle between two different sizes of aperture.

The Samsung W2018 is the first Samsung flagship phone to come with variable aperture, here's a GIF of the camera lens switching between the aperture..

Will this be in the S9??

Samsung reveals more info about its ISOCELL image sensor, could appear in the S9

http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/tech-news-samsung-reveals-more-info-about-its-isocell-image-sensor-could-appear-s9

From article
".....3-stack fast readout sensor which can record slow-mo video at 480 fps in Full HD (1080p)! Technically speaking, the sensor should also be able to record video at 960 fps in HD (720p)..... one of the few phones in the market that can record super slow-mo videos...."

"......"Super PD" (Super Phase Detection) autofocus; the image sensor can identify the distance of fast-moving subjects in low light conditions for faster and accurate autofocusing...."
