How much money you guys spend on your home network?

I see many people here talking of upgrading to mesh networking with Asus routers or dedicated mesh routers. some also run multiple access points with dedicated routers switches etc.

My own network consist of a old dell pc(pfsense router+VM) a cheap tplink switch and a unifi AP. Total cost around $500 which cost around a higher end consumer router but less then a mesh system.

I am interested to know how you guys set up your home network and how much you spend on it

I use Netgear Orbi which was around $600. Prior to buying Orbi I had Apple and ASUS routers with Moca setup($700+) to get wifi signal in different rooms.

In my opinion, Mesh technology definitely made wifi coverage better.

I remember seeing the edgerouter lite for $150+ in sim lim. Buy from Amazon probably cheaper

Nah, just have too many LAN ports, 3 per room adds up really quickly.

I see, to bad I live in old HDB flat so no ethernet trunking. I just put most of my wired devices together. The rest can use WiFi

For me, I didn't spend a lot on networking equipments, mainly because I planned ahead and chose a slower broadband connection for cost savings.

- Huawei RG: $2/mth on M1 Fibre 100Mbps (used for Voice as well; returned to M1 in March 2013)
- ASUS RT-N15U: Free on M1 Fibre 150Mbps (swapped for RMA; given away already)
- TP-Link Nano: $40+ (used that to complement on coverage once in a while; now kept in drawer instead)
- ASUS RT-N56U: Free on M1 Fibre 200Mbps (low usage from Feb 2015 - Feb 2018; now in full use for MBR as AP).
- ASUS RT-N66U: $199 (replace ASUS RT-N15U; in use since March 2014 as router (except Oct 2016 - June 2018) / AP (off since Oct 2016) / OpenVPN Server (since 2015; inactive during Oct 2016 - June 2017))
- ASUS RT-AC1200G+: $5/mth topup on M1 Fibre 300Mbps - ongoing contract (now in use as main AP, providing coverage for most parts of the home; Oct 2016 - June 2017 was main router/AP).

Contract period:
- 100Mbps Fibre: Mar 2011 - Mar 2013
- 150Mbps Fibre: Mar 2013 - Feb 2015
- 200Mbps Fibre: Feb 2015 - Oct 2016
- 300Mbps Fibre: Oct 2016 - now (may recontract in June-July 2018)

Internet: Whizcomms 1gbps plan ($28 per month for 2 years)
ONR: Free provided by Whizcomms
Wireless Router: Netgear N7000 ($140)

That's it. No ethernet trunking of cables as I don't like cables at all. Everything is on WIFI. No problems at all as even my master bedroom toilet and all the other corners of my HDB resale flat get 4 bars and above.

My gaming PC on WIFI get 500-600mbps from the router.

Haha actually its $32 per month for 2 years but 3 months free so add up to 28 per month

Moca seemed to give good speeds when I measured using speedtest but there seemed to be buffering during streaming of online content such as IPTV. Once I changed to Orbi, the buffering is gone and the signal reaches the corners of home.

Still have other misc items like keystone, cat 6 cables etc.

Previously DIY pull Ethernet cables to all rooms.

3 x dual port cat6 legrand network point $100
16 port cat6 patch panel $50
+ Misc items like trunking, double side tape, paint etc

Previously, my phone is struggling with the poor reception from the single RT-AC78U in my masterbed room and gaming room. With the ubiquiti setup, I'm getting almost full bar 5G reception in every part of the house. So it's money well spent imho

I used to have a linksys ea3200 and then got ubiquiti uap-lr but was not satisfied with it so decided to try used cisco from ebay. I have been slowly building it since 2014.

cisco 3845 - router
cisco sg200 - switch
netgear S3300 - switch (10gb uplinks)
cisco uc520 - sip and fxo gateway, poe for ip phones
cisco 2504 - wireless controller
cisco 3602e/i - 4x access points with RM3000AC modules
server - for running some vms (sophos, mail server etc..)
qnap TS831x - backup nas

everything has been running reliably great and while cost is a little high, i am pretty satisfied with it and have no complaints.

no subscription required. the wireless controller has a permanent license for 5 aps and the ap only requires a cap-wap firmware.
