Hi,, I’m new to NAS.

Wanted to get a basic NAS to do cctv recording, some files cloud storage backup and heard can do Apple phone backup?

Interested in DS218j, DS218 play since they look the cheapest entry.

Can anyone confirm on the Apple phone backup thingy?

You can just plug in any size HDD and see if plug in and out is in the log or not. This is just to test and make sure port is working properly.

I don’t have spare HDD and it requires min 8TB HDD..
Wanna get the lazada 10TB but missed the coupon.

is it possible to use a NAS without a RAID array? 3 HDD meaning I should see 3 separate drives?

Yes you could do that. However if your intention is to achieve data segregation and not just physically, you could still built 3 separate volumes on top of a RAIDed array of hard disks. This way you can still benefit from using what a NAS offers

Will it affects my repairing?
Because I been prompt to put a similar size HDD by synology.

Btw is it possible to downsize my current 4 HDD to 3 HDD without losing data.

Example current setup:
1. 6TB HDD
2. 6TB HDD
3. 8TB HDD
4. 8TB HDD (I intended to remove and use 3 HDD only)

I not sure on SHR on how they strip parity across the HDD. Best is faster copy out your data to another location in case repair fail.

for photo storage , cloud sync and probably run dockers...

ds218+ or ds718+?

ds 218+ dual core seems to score better bench mark at single core operation and ds718+ quad core better at multi core operstions.

so given the type of usage i probably be having, not sure if it will be more advantages to go for dual or quad core.

any recommendation?

If running dockers, you would be better off with DS718+.

You will appreciate the quad core down the road but more RAM would be good (DS1517+ 16Gb)

Storage wise, not much difference in CPU.
