Hi, I went on my own solo trip to Kyushu last year too. In my opinion, 3 nights is already overkill in Kumamoto. And besides, the main attraction (Kumamoto Castle) is still under construction and won't be ready so soon, why not you explore other cities like Nagasaki or Kagoshima?

hello :D

its my first time visiting Kyushu region.

how many days u went for?
ya i did look at kagoshima.. but i dont really like keep changing hotels for 10n trips.. any suggestions? preferably 3 hotels stay max.

actually i can skip yufu..
my friend told me to max 3 nights in fukuoka as well..
thoughts?

I went for 10 nights in total. Haha I visited quite a few cities actually.

In total I visited 5 cities. My travel went something like this.

Day 1: Touch down FUK. Depart to Beppu right away. Stay 1 night at Beppu
Day 2: Beppu to Fukuoka. Stay at Fukuoka.
Day 3 & 4: Fukuoka to Kagoshima. Stay 2 nights at Kagoshima
Day 5: Kagoshima to Kumamoto. Stay 1 night at Kumamoto.
Day 6/7/8: Kumamoto to Nagasaki. 3 Nights at Nagasaki.
Day 9 and 10: Back to Fukuoka. Stay 2 nights at Fukuoka.

Next day I depart from FUK back to Singapore. Let me dig out my itinerary for the exact places I visited if you are interested :)

you not interested in southern kyushu? the nicer places should be there. fkk and nagasaki are not exactly exciting places. 5 nights is slightly long imo. i did 4 i think and i found it dull.

you can consider taking a 1hr shinkansen to hiroshima if you don't mind going out of kyushu. i kinda like chugoku better, miyajima and iwakuni are nice.

u mean Kagoshima?

i wont mind trying down south. but dont like the idea of changing(more than 3) hotels through out the 10/11 days

thats why I am planning
First 3 nights go Kumamoto first. then from there can go Kagoshima for day trip.

after that return to Fukuoka. and visit nagasaki or watsoever from there.

Tentatively 5th Oct - 14/15 Oct

Day 1 - 3 Kumamoto (3 Nights)
Day 4 - 6 Kagoshima (2 Nights)
day 7 - 10 Fukuoka (4 or 5 Nights)

???

Day 4-6 is actually 3 nights. Not 2 nights.

haha :D thanks

miyazaki maybe.

eh whats there?

I am not driving. so hopefully most places can be done by train/bus.

Below is tentatively.. which one should i shorten or add? should i stay in Kagoshima for 4 nights instead of staying at Kumamoto then go Kagoshima?
Maybe during Fukuoka (base) stay, i will go nagasaki and dazaifu for day trips.

Kumamoto (2 nights), Kagoshima (2 nights), Yufuin (2 nights), Fukuoka (4 nights).

Day 1 (5/10) - Fukuoka -> Kumamoto
Day 2 (6/10) - Kumamoto
Day 3 (7/10) - Kumamoto -> Kagoshima
Day 4 (8/10) - Kagoshima
Day 5 (9/10) - Kagoshima -> Yufuin
Day 6 (10/10) - Yufuin
Day 7 (11/10) - Yufuin -> Fukuoka
Day 8 (12/10) - Fukuoka
Day 9 (13/10) - Fukuoka
Day 10 (14/10) - Fukuoka
Day 11 (15/10) - Fukuoka ->>> Singapore

for 11 days, i think it is ok to stick to northern kyushu instead of traveling both north and south. u can make use of JR Northern Kyushu pass to cover the more expensive transports

here is my itnerary from many years back for reference.
everything was by public transport except for kikuchi gorge

27 Oct (Kumamoto) - Kumamoto castle
28 Oct (Kumamoto) - Kikuchi gorge, Kikuchi Flower Hill
29 Oct (Kumamoto) - Aso
30 Oct (Kumamoto) - Saga Balloon festival
31 Oct (Kumamoto) - Tsujunkyo, Suizenji Jojuen park
1 Nov (Nagasaki) - Mount Inasa
2 Nov (Nagasaki) - Peace park, Oura church
3 Nov (Nagasaki) - Huis Ten Bosch
4 Nov (Fukuoka) - Marinoa City
5 Nov (Fukuoka) - Beppu
6 Nov (Fukuoka) - Yanagawa, Tenjin
7 Nov (Fukuoka) - Hawks Town, Fukuoka Tower
8 Nov (Fukuoka) - return to Singapore

u may want to consider visiting beppu. can go Liang court and get the latest copy of go japan. this issue cover quite a bit on beppu and oita perfecture

JR Pass not a problem. though this is my first time visiting Kyushu

ok i will consider visiting beppu
but one of the day i might throw in visiting Nagasaki.

I going Yufu to stay 2 nights which is confirmed.

I saw you have 5 nights in Kumamoto.
so you are suggesting not to stay/go Kagoshima?
I think travelling and jr ticket are like an issue... for Kagoshima -> Yufuin
even with south pass i have to pay additional $70+

kumamoto city its a convenient base to visit surrounding area

i think its best to focus on your travel objectives, like theme park, nature, foral, festival, food etc … so decision making will be easier

agree with evilerniex, just focus north. you can always cover south on another trip. don't spread to thinly, travel in between eats up plenty of precious time

imho Kyushu best done self drive … i drove from kumamoto aso beppu Kitakyushu fukuoka during my last trip

i think you can find popular kyushu food in fukuoka/hakata

interesting fact about Kumamoto (probably other kyushu cities as well), their tap water is sourced from underground spring water. anyway please check again with hotel before you drink direct :)

Just to confirm, for SUICA card usage, it can only be used on the lines marked in black/white? This is called the JR EAST line in tokyo?

If i wanna go to other parts like Tsukishima station for the Tsuji market, i have to get off at Yurakocho station and buy a ticket towards Tsukishima station via Yurakocho line?

you can use SUICA on both JR & private railways
as long as you see the IC logo, just tap & go
