Long story short, when my mom's aunt house went from a few Mbps internet speed to 1Gbps after the installation of the PTP bridge which you can read here

All 8 people in here house went on a downloading, streaming, torrenting spree which made to asus router lose its WiFI connection constantly. This did not happen before so I assume it has to do with the router not keeping up with the increasing load.

Would the unifi ap hd be a good replacement? Since it claims 500+ connections etc?

The 500+ client number is an overly optimistic estimate. You will run out of bandwidth long before you max out the AP.

In most cases having multiple APs is better then having only one as it helps spread out the load between APs.

This is a Tri-Band router.

Have you consider different group of devices on different bands.

Since there are 2 5GHz bandwidth to utilize.

We alreay have devices connected to both bands. Usually 20-30 devices are connected. With guest it goes up to 50+

Connection usually is fine until it face heavy usage

One Asus router was able to cover the whole house since it's made out of wood. Also prefer to keep it to just one AP

Need to consider multiple AP routers &or mesh network for large number of users.

Single router unable to cope with too many users.
As this is not a case on coverage alone.

I went ahead and got 2 unifi AC HDs. Found out that 1 AP is sufficient to cover the whole house. The 2nd AP was used to cover their gardern/porch instead
