Depend, budget air ear more painful than bigger flight. Sometimes you get ear pain after land. I usually feel pain when going up ward and before landing.
To ease the pain, best to eat sweet, as you suck or chew, the pain is gone.

I am not aware of the link between budget flights and ear pain. Usually I pass lollipops around during takeoff and landing to ward off the problem.

it depends on what kind of aircraft coz cabin pressure may be different? I usually keep sipping on water.

usually just too excited and happy to start the holiday so when the ears havent popped yet its not a biggie

Ear pain when pressure changes is common. Eat chewy sweets or lollipop to swallow saliva can settle liao.

But on specific trips I never hear before.

Some planes are more comfortable than others when dealing with pressurization. Maybe both trips use different planes, so you felt it.

Not sure if i come in too late, but good general tips

I have chronic sinusitis which always cause ear pain during descend.

pre-applying a nasal decongestant drop will totally prevent any air pressure ear pain. Hope it helps
