Build Ready for critique! For 144hz gaming

Hey guys,

Looking to build a 1440p 144hz gaming PC or as close to it as possible without throwing bang for buck out the window.

Any thoughts on the build below? Any experience with Klevv, Super Flower etc?

GTX 1080 is existing. Not really keen on overclocking unless it's dead simple and will yield significant gain.

1440p, 144Hz?

I suggest selling 1080 and getting a 1080Ti, SLI if possible.

I am having trouble hitting 100Hz+ at 1440p, ultra settings in most AAA games. Even Monster Hunter World can only hit 70+ fps.

Maybe SLI might hit 144Hz.

CPU is fine. Need high Mhz CPU for high frame rate gaming and 8700 does well.

Some games don't hit 144Hz on my 1700X at 4.0 Ghz (especially single threaded games like Final Fantasy XIV)

But since new GPU tech is coming out soon, no need to upgrade GPU first...

unfortunately that's the downside of ryzen.. even mid end intel chip perform better than my 1800x during gaming

Superflower is a very good psu brand. But 5 years warranty only. Perhaps a Seasonic Focus Plus for 10 Years Warranty? Also, you don't need 750W unless you wanna SLI. A 650W is more than enough.

RAM are all about the same. Klevv or whatever, on an intel system, don't make too much difference.

Getting a Z370 mobo matching with 8700 though, it's weird. Top up for the K variant perhaps? Unlocked chip allow some overclocking if you needed it. Otherwise, downgrade to a MSI B360 Gaming Arctic perhaps and 2666mhz RAM kit. If this Klevv 3000mhz pair is cheaper than every other 2666mhz ram kit, just go with it.

Also, you will need an aftermarket cooler. Suggest a CM Hyper 212 for budget, or Cryorig H7 for the clean neat look and slightly better performance. Stock cooler will thermal throttle.

Also, gtx 1080 is insufficient for 1440p 144hz at high settings. Dependent on title, but generally you can do medium-high settings for most games for 144fps.

Using Klevv 3000mhz RAMS 16GB kit for my i5-8600K @ 5ghz. Rock solid stable.

Yes. You can Google and YouTube around. See i7-8700 performance with stock fan vs ANY aftermarket ones. The stock will have thermal issue where the boost clocks cannot sustain steadily. It's not thermal throttling but Intel Turbo Boost depends on the temperature, just like Nvidia GPU Boost. So, higher the temps, lower the boost.

A normal/decent tower cooler will sustain the boost clock much better as your temps is lower.

I would suggest u either top up to a i7 8700k/ downgrade to a i5 8600k to get a overclock to 5ghz. Current gen i5 is last gens i7, 4C8T i7 vs 6C6T i5
12 threads for gaming is usually too much, most games use 3-6 threads. If you're doing video editing then it's a different story
Clock speed is much more important. Reason why Ryzen system are slower in gaming is because of their architechture design and much slower clock speeds when overclocked (4ghz vs 5ghz)

Also don't waste potential of your Z370 motherboard , it's much more expensive because it can overclock and have vrms for oc.

Get a aftermarket cooler as well, even if you're getting the i7 8700, stock cooler is too weak for it.

TLDR: If want best bang for buck for gaming Intel go i5 8600k oc 5ghz, Z370 mobo, decent aftermarket cooler, other choices are fine

Edit: Just to add, oc-ing cpu isn't hard and if you wanna play it safe 4.8ghz is achievable for 99% of the intel CPUs. Remember to increase Vcore voltage if u crash. Gains would be significant for many games. I think u would be more likely bottlenecked by the 1080 tho at 1440p

5% difference. About there at most. 2666mhz is the maximum of H310/B360/H370 series motherboard can support. Hence I mentioned downgrade to that if you going for cheaper motherboard. If you got Z370 with i7-8700K, then 3000mhz coz the board support overclocking and you can push the ram frequency higher than the other series of motherboard.

Thanks for all the advice everyone! Just finished the rig - eventually went with a 8700k and Z370 with a Cryorig H7 cooler. Gonna spend some time to OC. Went with Fractal Mini C on the case in the end.
