usually 3rd party cheaper but a few times book direct from hotel cheaper especially early bird offer

there are discounts provided by 3rd party website.
having said , there might also be chances where direct is cheaper ...
so far all the hotels that I have stayed, usually from 3rd party websites.
mostly used agoda, expedia.com ... rarely use booking.com and hotels.com
