Hello there! I was wondering if I could get some advice/info regarding the NUS Data Science Course. I am matriculating this year and I've been struggling between applying for Data Science, Com Science (possibly double major with stats) and Business Analytics. Could anyone give some insight into how NUS Data Science, being a relatively new course, is like? I understand it is possible to learn data science skills through com science and business analytics so is there an advantage to limiting myself to data science from the start by joining the Data Science course? Are there also specializations in NUS Data Science as I cant seem to find any info on that?

Thank you in advance and have a nice day!!

I feel like not only that there is not many advantages of limiting to data science, there are actually disadvantages of limiting to it lol. If your goal is to learn well, you are better off doing CS/Stats/Math (note: not even business analytics). The reason is that these traditional courses will get to learn more in depth in their respective fields rather than just scratching the surface at every domain. These majors can also do data science but they can also do what data science majors can’t.

We do have focus areas (I don’t think they are specialisations tho) which will be coming up soon (no other news atm). Right now, this course is still relatively new so a lot of things are still being tested and are not ‘well-planned’ by the department. It really depends on what is your motivation behind getting a data science degree.

i've only been through the first year so i can't comment much on the overall course..

Hi! Good evening to you. I'm an NSF going to ord soon and I'm considering nus DSA as one of my choices. I'm currently having a hard time choosing between industrial and systems engineering and DSA. I wanted to PM you but the website told me i needed 10 pts to pm...(you can tell i created an account just so I could ask you questions)

I've read about the course online and in the forums but I would like to ask you some questions personally. You were a y1 student in 2017, hence should be a y2s2 student now right? How has the course been for you so far? Has it been hectic? I've read that the course is heavy on computing and I'm quite scared of that portion of the course as I have 0 computing background and knowledge (coming from jc). I've heard some pretty scary stories from friends who are already studying in nus who go for computing mods and only a few of them are new to it while almost the whole class knows what's going on...

I would also like to ask you about internships. Have you found one? I've also read that there will be an 18-month internship programme for the students matriculating since 2018. Does that mean we will not get to go for overseas exchange? (if we opt for the internship)

I probably do have more questions about the course but I shouldn't spam them all now and I feel bad troubling a stranger to help me in making a decision. If you have some spare time and don't mind helping me out, I'll really really appreciate it! Cheers
