You don't need a guide for Halong Bay. Just book a tour from a travel agent. There are many travel shops near Hanoi center (near the lake). They will arrange everything.

Book there will be cheaper than from hotel or website .

Recommended to spent at least a night on the junk, at halong bay. Not advisable to do a day trip, due to 4 hours journey each way from Hanoi.

There are junks with dinner in a cave, Google and see. I tried to book Dragon Pearl junk, but it was full during my trip.

You definitely don't need a guide to tour Hanoi.
Just need to book a tour for Halong Bay.

It's much like a very dated Singapore.

Just walk around the streets, absorb the culture, try GrabBike.
And most importantly of course, eat Pho.

There's a rundown stall selling just 4 (I think?) different types of Pho in pure vietnamese language, with long queues piling up before opening at 5PM.
Can't remember the location details so I'm sorry on that.
But it's pretty obvious to spot with its long queue at an old rundown shop.

Will Hanoi be difficult to navigate for someone who hasn't been to Vietnam before?

Gotten a chance to go over for a 6 months intership attachment.
