think about it, the core purpose of a VPN is to mask your IP, DNS, ISP details.

VPN has been used by business since the 1990s for employees to connect to the business internal network.

The idea of using VPN for privacy , bypassing geo restrictions & censorship is a very recent development.

yea work related use aside that is.. even till this day still have to connect to company's VPN with UID, PW, and token OTP on my phone and laptop in order to check emails, access intranet, ms office, onedrive etc.. and another VPN to connect to when i need to access my router webUI remotely.

but in this thread those VPNs wouldnt really cross most user's mind. :s13:

Haha, I was using company VPN during my trip to China to access work stuff, at the same time I also can access Gmail/YouTube etc on the company laptop. No Facebook though as company blocks Facebook.

Edit: I also remembered long ago we used dial-up and PPTP for access through NTU network in the late 90s.

You should host your own VPN at home to use while in china.

he meant downloading via bit torrent with a VPN to mask his presence

Haha I totally forgot about torrent stuff — I mainly used NUS mirror and 0x.sg mirror for Linux stuff but once or twice I did use torrent to download Linux images, no need VPNs for that. I am not into torrent at all and I am not into 4K stuff either. Streaming at 480p/720p is good enough for me and I will be very happy with 1080p.

Anyone on NordVPN? The speed seems to be sub-par compared to Astrill....

Me. Never used astrill. But it seems slower than Expressvpn... still comtemplating whether to keep subscription 🤔 I might since it seems to be the most value for money with the cyber month discount.

Just installed 1.1.1.1 DNS app on my iPhone 6S and notice it is actually implemented as a local VPN, not so sure why it needs to do that.

Edit: it is the same for their Android app as well. Tried on Mi Max 1.

Can't u just change DNS IP in the settings?
I remembered I did that with my iPad.

You can just change in iOS settings.

I am just curious why the 1.1.1.1 app uses local VPN on both iOS and Android.

Maybe for encrypting DNS queries?

Cloudfare DNS supports DNS over Https (DoH) and DNSSEC
https://developers.cloudflare.com/1....ns-over-https/

Which can only be implemented if u run a local DNS server.

Pi-hole is a good way to do just that
https://pi-hole.net

Coupled with a local hosted VPN server, you can get the same benefits that this app provides but with more features like ads and tracker blocking on the DNS level.

if you are more paranoid you can even set up a recursive DNS server with Pi-hole

maybe it's time to ditch my SmartDNS (Getflix) and use this DNS
no more love for the Google DNS 8.8.8.8?
