I know of people with rank point of around 70 entering ntu accountancy without appealing.. any reasons why accounting is declining?

Decline in admission criteria not solely due to popularity.

1) Declining birth rates in general. Accountancy has one of the largest cohort intakes, so it's most susceptible to this. You maintain supply but demand drops, sure affected.

2) Now got SIT & SUSS in addition to NUS/NTU/SMU. And these are on equal footing with ntu graduates when applying to big 4. SIT in particular has a longer internship programme.

3) Just my own opinion: Feel like 2000s kids have different thinking from 1990s kids. Accountancy require you to "suffer a few years" before your career really takes off, which is not appealing to youngsters these days who wants to starts high. Can refer to the B4 thread to read experiences by seniors.

4) Popularity factor - too many threads talking about decline in accountancy and automation being the future.. can't be bothered to explain here.

As for myself, I was accepted into accountancy in 2011 but made a switch to business in 2012. No regrets and never looked back.

May i know why did you prefer to study business rather than accountancy, since accountancy is seen as more specialised?

wah legit ah 70 RP?? IGP still says 82.5 for 10th percentile haha.

yeah agree with Nicholas92, NTU accountancy cohort size is huge and nowadays we have so many local unis offering accounting. so keeping supply constant, demand drop due to falling birth rates and increase in market size. also there is a general shift away from accounting because people are saying that accounting will get replaced. but tbh it won't, there are so many things for accountants to do, automation will help ease the burden. if anything, the job of an accountant will finally get more interesting instead of boring mundane tasks!

regardless, don't get too fixated on the IGP haha everyone here is smart af, trust me the bell curve is STEEP.
