She is 56 years old this year. Belongs to the older generation of Malaysians who can/could speak better English than the current ones who speak English as though they have 3 fishballs inside their mouth.

MALAYSIAN-born actress Tan Sri Michelle Yeoh (pic) revealed that she was mocked for not being a pure Chinese, Sinchew Daily reported.

She said this in an interview with entertainment programme BUILD Series, where she appeared alongside fellow cast members Awkwafina, Ken Jeong and fellow Malaysian Henry Golding to promote the romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians.

“When I first went to Hong Kong, they didn’t see me as a pure Chinese because I grew up in Malaysia. I don’t know how to write Chinese and didn’t speak Chinese very well,” she said.

She recalled an incident where she went to a restaurant in Chinatown in England and asked for an English menu.

“I didn’t know how to use chopsticks, too. With my limited Cantonese, I could hear people saying that I was neither human nor the foreign devil (a term used to mock Chinese who do not speak or act Chinese).

“To them I was a ‘banana’, I looked Chinese but didn’t act like one,” she said.

They have a choice. As long as that is not done at the expense of another, nothing wrong with that. Who are we to judge who they have to be? Just because she's Yeoh and she has to swear a certain allegiance? Just because she's Asian and so she must live up to the stereotypical Asian? Come on... you need to expand your horizons and look beyond the shallow end.

Just watched Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy. Michelle Yeoh's spoken Mandarin is not very fluent but her English is much better. Not sure how she grew up in Malaysia, but Malaysians her age should know Chinese, Cantonese (Hokkien in Penang), Malayu and English.

There is a right way to use Chopsticks.

If you cross your chopsticks you are using it incorrectly. You are hence either a Barbarian or fake chinese.

Go test and see if you are really chinese. I is Peranakan, hence is 100 pure Banana
