90% getting this.. anything I should know before I press the button?

As a few users have pointed out, there could be noise issues if you are using an unbalanced input or perhaps other reasons. If you already have a decent external dac that has balanced output and isolated power, shouldn't be an issue. I personally have no issues with noise, but some users on this forum have reported this.

Another issue that you have to consider is that it's almost an all in one package (speakers + internal amplifier) so if one of them fails, you have to replace everything. But at 299, i think it's not really an issue (just buy another one when it happens lor).

I also find that in order for them to sound the best the 2 speakers have to be adequately far apart. I have found 70cm to be the sweet spot for my scenerio. Do check if your table is big enough (should be at least 1.2m long). There should also be adequate distance from the speaker to where you are usually sitting.

Last but not least white colour might get dirty easily. But if you do housekeeping regularly should be fine.

Still waiting for the first spoilt LSR305 owner to appear so I can repair and review

For something with only 1 year warranty and wide ownership, it is uncanny that we are not seeing any till now.

Oh and you can buy just one side if it fails.

If anyone is looking for Focal Bird, one pair just came up in Carousell for $450. Search for "focal speakers" .. it's not from me btw.

I am using Topping D10 for my Presonus Erie. For Headphone listening, I am on Fiio dac + Beyerdynamic DT880.

I have a question about sample rates on Topping D10. It seems that sample rates are fixed by system settings rather than by application. So if I set the rate at 24/96, it will always be 24/96 even though I am playing a. 24/88.2 file.

Is there any music software that will set the D10 sample rate according to the file being played back?

Also slight annoyance with D10, when my PC goes to sleep and wakes up again, the D10 seems to remain in standby mode and doesn't wake up?

I need help from the pros here if anyone can help regarding the LSR305 JBL. Some notes i taken here can be used for the above poster who is considering this model

Setup:
PC (no DAC or interface)
Direct Y splitter connection from PC motherboard (green hole) [Buy separately]

Noted issues (all observations at speaker volume 5)
1. Speaker slight buzz at volume 6 and above. Pretty normal from what I read so far
2. Speaker significant buzz even at volume 0 from PC volume control! when i start gaming.

Issue no 2 is something i wish to be fixed, anyone have experience to resolve this issue?

Thanks

Recommended for Studio monitor is to connect to either a mixer/sound interface.
PC soundcard can be connected but usually is routed through a mixer/sound
interface.

FYI PC Soundcard are unbalanced output so to connect directly into
JBL balanced input it will not be ideal without a mixer/sound interface.

You can consider sound interface like Focusrite

s-l1000.jpg

Less than $300, can get from Music/DJ shops like Swee Lee.
Get good quality balanced TRS cable.

Well... this is kind of how Windows works. Seems to depend on soundcard/driver tho? I remember last time VIA Envy24 chipset will switch sampling rate automatically.

foobar2000's WASAPI exclusive mode seems to be not working on Windows 10...

So basically you are limited to ASIO drivers if you want auto sample rate changing. Fortunately foorbar2000 and other players do have ASIO support. Unfortunately your soundcard needs to ASIO drivers, too. And for most USB soundcards of the "no need install driver" kind, they don't have ASIO drivers.

For the second question, try this, assuming you're using USB

also wanted to check cos i read that they are hard for low powered amps to drive.

"Sensitivity is only 86dB so low-powered amplifiers may have trouble driving them. The speakers can be bi-wired via the gold binding posts outback."

i know these aren't too costly to replace, what peaked my interest is they size of it, which is something i don't have much of on my desk, or around it. so if i need to replace, i don't know if have space for a proper amp or similar.

i was also looking at the kef lsx, seems like the perfect speakers, but just really quite pricey.
My bookshelf are also 86dB & found them having average sensitivity (sufficient) - modern amp ard 50w or more no prob driving these 4-6 ohms

Some yester yrs spkr are likely to be having low spkr sensitivity- these 83-85dB 8ohms suffered when driven by Tube amps.

I am thkful for not having high sensitivity spkr like 88-91dBs spkrs are well known to exhibit any source/sound path imperfection, one such common complain is hiss noise.

In your case - wharfedales is a reputable mfg, their brand positioning is affordable mainstream trustworthy spkr, they dnt expect all their clients having deep pockets fr high current Class-A amps, or having exorbitant sound crafts/independent low noise powerline/interconnect - so their spkr design to have average sensitivity as a safe choice, fr amateur audiophiles - fr Class AB/B/D amp. - if your issue is space fr full size ClassA/B amp - I really suggest to chk out Class-D (even JBL just uses an aged STA350BW average Class D in its LSR305 - no heatsink on amp chip & smps - rated just 40w) ; Class D improved leaps & bounds over last decade - so I dnt see why a compact well build recent Class D can't do justice or better to your mainstream spkr) :D

End of the day, well balance spkr system, pair with mainstream amp - you shld be safe. Listen fr yourself - especially anything exotic - dnt take anybody words as empirical gold standard - we all have different audio preferences (british, americans mfg), audio source.

Yea seems like speakers that are designed for balanced connection tend to not give a hoot about common-mode noise when used with unbalanced connection.

Or in other words, this speaker is designed for XLR/TRS. You use special cables so it can be connected to 3.5mm. And issue no 2 is a side effect.

At least this is what I believe. Because there are people with XLR/TRS that are reporting no noise issues. (Note that the LSR are still known to have a bit of self-noise even with no input)

So... solutions:

1) Buy a DAC or soundcard with XLR/TRS
2) Buy a DAC with electrical isolation from the computer. Optical SPDIF is the surefire way, coaxial SPDIF by-right should work if everything followed standardized requirements (But seems like half the time this isn't followed). Some USB DACs come with USB isolator, or you can buy those on their own.
3) Ground lift trick

For this, i had read that it might be either gimmicky or some ppl swear by it for a sonic difference. What is your take on this? Im running LSR305 with Topping DX7 DAC.

It's like medicine. If you have a problem, it does what it needs to do. If you don't have a problem, it does nothing.

Same goes for things like line filters, cables, extra capacitors, physical isolation etc.

And this is also why for a same item some people find it gimmicky and some people swear by it, because the people who find it gimmicky didn't see a diff while people who swear by it saw a diff.

not sure if mine is considered usb insulator

but i originally had some screeching high pitch sound from my desk speaker (sometimes not always)

Suspecting the area between 3.5mm port and cable 3.5mm tip is the most vulnerable and it was near 650w psu.

i 3d printed a case that covers it

the screeching sound is gone for real.

Get good quality balanced TRS cable.

To combine both advice for my situation, I need a sound interface.
The connection is PC->Interface->Speakers
PC->Interface default is USB/optical SPDIF?
Interface-> Speakers is XLR/TRS individual cables

any other interface recommended? The focusrite seem to be able to plug in guitar and mic to record.. which can be a renewed hobby haha.

Thanks for all help:D

Im using amazonbasic USB-B cable to DAC. lol.

Not sure if i wanna try an USB isolator. But for now, i dun hear any noise on high or low volume.

I have a DAC that has balanced but usually for non critical listening I use my o2 + SDAC and this JBL 305 doesn't accept RCA so I have to switch on my balanced DAC will be abit of a hassle la because I don't have a pre-amp and I have a 2 sources , of course I can just use my balanced DAC but I like the o2/sdac for non critical listening. any advice?
