I am contemplating to take up a MBA. My bosses been encouraging me to take one up for career development and all.

I have a little cold feet when i saw some finance topics there. I am quite bad at Math and such. How can I prepare for these? Attend any foundation or short courses?

Those who been through stuff like Accounting for managers, Finance for managers etc.. How was it?

Thanks.

Hi,

MBA is a general degree so the accounting/finance modules will not be too tough (unless you are in those specialist MBAs that focus on finance). Accounting is not really about maths but how to organise data in some regulated ways... Finance might be a bit more tricky as it does involve some mathematics but unless you are in a master of finance, I do not think you need any high level mathematics. Concepts will be important...

If you are worried about your maths/acc/finance, I would suggest go and enrol into some relevant MOOCs to prepare yourself for the math/finance components... try e.g. Coursera... or get some books from lib

Alternatively, you can find some some adult learning short courses from local poly or unis... SMU Academy do offer a whole range of short courses, usually 1 to 3 days but they are not cheap... Polytechnics may have SkillsFuture funded short courses.... good luck!

Company sponsorship or Self paid for MBA? What is your occupation now and did your boss promises you a promotion cause MBA is at a very general level.

Most of the time, MBA are use for networking while learning something new in business especially for non-business graduates.

Depend on where you take your MBA. If local universities, it will be better take CAT/ACCA (Not whole course)/LCCI/PEI Private Diploma in F&A to build out your foundation first.

If PEIs, most of the MBA courses are reasonable and suitable for those who do not have knowledge to cope.

My bosses or my head of BU.. The last two jobs told me to take it. They say beneficial for my next move. I am made known as their successor.

Recently, I went to another job interview, the would be boss encourage me to upgrade. I found out that this new coy are able to sponsor the MBA.

I am looking at SMU?

But my foundation as i posted is i think weak. I am trying to equip myself before taking it within the next 2 yrs.

Since you are make known as their successor, then is there still a needs for a MBA?

SMU is good at marketing themselves. But it will be good if you do some research what kind of possible network can you get. Some local university seem to take in fresh graduate too which does not contribute much to your network.

Like I say, can consider CAT/ACCA (Not whole course)/LCCI/PEI Private Diploma in F&A to build out your foundation first.

Best if you can find SMU MBA student/graduate to get notes, past year exam and training materials from them to prepare yourself such as finding a short course more relevant or find a tutor to custom train you.

They say it will come in good use if i decided to have it. Not a must.

I have friends who feedback good networks from NTU and strong alumni plus the curriculum is not too bad.

I actually wanted to have a tutor to help. :)
