Liverpool's SECRET Champions League preparation - Boss reveals how Reds planned for Spurs

Following the end of the Premier League season, which saw the Reds narrowly miss out on the title, Jurgen Klopp's side had three weeks without any competitive football.

But the German was keen to ensure his side got some last-minute preparation under their belts in Marbella before Saturday's Champions League clash with Spurs.

And it appears Liverpool reached out to Benfica's reserve team to ask them for a secret friendly to get a taste of how Mauricio Pochettino's side would line-up in Madrid.

“Liverpool felt the need, after three weeks without competition, to make a friendly match," Benfica B manager Renato Paiva told A Bola

"It was easy: It couldn’t be English teams because of leaks, couldn’t be Spanish teams because [Mauricio] Pochettino had been in Spain many years, it couldn’t be French teams because [Hugo] Lloris is the keeper of the France national team. There was Portugal left.

“And there was a lot of weight – and I have to say it because we were told by Jurgen Klopp and Pepijn Lijnders – the quality of young players of Benfica."

Klopp and his backroom team had clearly done their research before reaching out to the Portuguese outfit.

And Paiva goes on to suggest the Liverpool boss knew Benfica's youngsters could adapt their game to match Pochettino's style of play.

"They looked the B team at the time third in the Liga 2," he continued.

"They don’t walk around distracted and could see it in the meetings.

"They saw the team playing and found similarities with Tottenham. Then came the choice.

The B team had to move to Marbella three days before and meet Liverpool’s technical staff, who was perfectly in tune with what Benfica B were like in technical-tactical terms, what Tottenham were like.

"Benfica B were asked to adopt some behaviours: two defensive players, two offensive players, as well as behavioural tactics on set pieces, similar to the ones that Tottenham do and could do in the Champions League final.

"For us to be a little more Tottenham and less Benfica B.”

Sources: Klopp could take sabbatical from 2022

Jurgen Klopp could take a year's sabbatical at the end of his Liverpool contract in 2022 and while the club's owners are hopeful he will commit to an extension, they are minded not to put pressure on him, sources have told ESPN FC.

The 51-year-old, who celebrated his first trophy as Liverpool manager with a 2-0 Champions League final victory over Tottenham last Saturday, has repeatedly stated his desire to take a break from the "very intense" demands of management when his contract expires.

It is a matter he has considered with his family, and he has mentioned a 12-month rest period would be his preference in the past.

While owners Fenway Sports Group want Klopp to remain on Merseyside beyond the next three years of his contract, they would not want to put him in the position of turning down a new offer.

Improved terms would therefore only be drafted if the German requested it and he has not yet provided any indication as to whether he has changed his mind on having time out after 2022.

Given the strong relationship between Klopp and FSG president Mike Gordon, who stayed at the manager's house on Sunday evening after the team's victory parade, there would not be any formal discussions or a lengthy process if he did decide to extend his commitment.

This is evidenced by how Liverpool handled the six-year contract they gave the Reds boss in June 2016. During a conversation with Gordon, Klopp said he could imagine himself being at the club for the rest of his career. FSG's president then called principal owner John Henry and chairman Tom Werner before a fresh deal was drawn up in a matter of hours. Klopp, who had been on holiday in Ibiza before ferrying to Formentera, signed it on June 16 -- his 49th birthday. The news was only officially announced by Liverpool at the start of preseason the following month.

Guiding the club to a sixth European Cup title in Madrid will not have acted as a spark for FSG to reward the German -- they would have offered Klopp a new contract after last year's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid in Kiev if he had wanted it. The owners believe that the scale of his influence at Liverpool cannot solely be measured by trophies.

They will have optimism that the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund coach, who spent seven years at both clubs, indicates he wants to surpass that time at Anfield, where he has been since October 2015.

FSG will, however, respect Klopp's decision if he wants to stick to his plan of taking a break when his contract runs out.

First Salah news, then this news. Maybe some people simply cannot stand the sight of Liverpool winning and start to spread fake news...

Melissa Reddy is tier 1.
She, James Pierce and Joyce are consider more reliable in Liverpool news. I believe there some truth in it, we can see in next few weeks if Klopp really sign extension.

if Klopp does not sign an extension, I get the sense that he will go all out and win us the EPL before he leaves.

Expected them to leave this summer but nonetheless wish them the best. Both of them have great personality off the pitch and Moreno is close with all the Brazilian players. But is time to improve the depth and freshen up the squad.

"T̶h̶e̶ ̶o̶w̶n̶e̶r̶s̶ I believe that the scale of his influence at Liverpool cannot solely be measured by trophies."

This is my copy pasta answer to the question someone asked if Klopp should be sacked for not producing a league title in the next 2-3 years.
