This thread is meant for all High and Ultrahigh Definition Discs discussions...

As people move from 480p to 1080p (Full HD) to Ultra HD, it's important to feed your TV with the right sources so the picture quality improves.

One interesting new way is to subscribe to Amazon Prime SG..
You can get free shipping when you spend over $60 and it's easy to combine purchases to enjoy this.

I still like to support local stores sometimes, but the price differences can be pretty high..

I only buy during Black Friday sales on U.S. Amazon.
When very new movies and all selling from USD 5.99 to USD 9.99 per blu-ray, even USD 12.99 for 4K ones.
Then ask customer service to waive off shipping charges. Works for me all the time.

How much to spend to waive off shipping?

Actually I find local sell too ex already. The retailers have to really understand why? I feel local users are still watching streaming and netflix as compared to US customers (maybe due to amazon).

No one will pay for extra unless the service is outstanding. That is the reason why retailers are facing the pressure from online sellers.

Hi,
You may rent or buy 4K ULTRA HD and BLU RAY movies from the little shop, Rida Video Centre, tucked at a corner of Coronation Shopping Plaza. Most of the titles are imported from USA.

Whilst physical media is not bound for the Smithsonian yet, streaming has taken off in a big way and you can have your ice cream in many different flavours*now..

The current main players in this world of movie streaming are
1 - Apple TV and the iTunes ecosystem
2- Google
3- Amazon Video

So, the million dollar question is are they all the same?

Well a friend and I decided to do an informal comparison.

He had access to VPN and we could use all three apps on my Sony, which can do very good HDR and Dolby Vision playback. It’s a light canon and you can read about my review below.

https://peteswrite.blogspot.com/2019/09/apple-tv-vs-movie-anywhere-vs-amazon.html

Also when we were comparing HDR vs DV, there was a difference...*

What about you? Do you feel the same?*

To me, physical disc still wins over streaming apps regardless of which.
Streaming wise in my opinion Netflix on compatible TV can
output Dolby Digital Plus which is near Dolby TrueHD but compressed.

I had compare those apps which are local version but not their US counterpart.
- Amazon prime depending on ISP, Starhub seems to lag real bad
thus affecting picture and sound. So occasion may have drop in/out
issue.
Pic and sound is so so.
- Google Play Movies, no lag on ISP.
Picture is OK but no DV support, sound depending on title.
Some is in Dolby Digital Plus while some is in PCM/Stereo
- Apple TV
Library, DV and Dolby Atmos support

Netflix and Apple TV in my opinion are the best streaming services here in SG.
But of cuz many will ponder why library here in SG so limited as compare with US.

Mainly due to censorboard as well as regional license thus library isn't that vast like US. Example can you find Blockers here in SG? There is but limited to Apple TV only but with censor.

Some scenes are omitted or alter if you compare with the original Blu ray release there is difference.

For blu rays players, both Singapore and USA are region A, so we can buy blu rays from the US and play them on our machines. Many people get from USA because it’s cheaper.

Normal blu rays are HD. If you want to play 4K/UHD, you need a uhd player. Also, it only makes sense if your TV has 4K resolution.

- Pricing
Local are much pricey than overseas, mainly due to requirement of censorboard license.
- Censor/cut
Certain local blu ray movie have contents like bonus feature /part of movie censor/cut
- Online have more title.
Example Kingsman it isn't sold here cuz it is ban from sales.
Only online have it
- Picture quality
Local and US to majority can't tell the difference.
To me US version stand out.
- Soundtrack format
Certain movie local version may have different sound format.
Probably due to censorship, the track was alter thus need to be re-recorded.

Ultimately US version is preferred mainly due to pricing.
Size of TV also plays a part as if your TV is smaller than 50".
You may not notice the difference.

Does the Blu ray vs 4K uhd make a lot of different ?
Are you using the right source and appropriate display ?

Regular UHD disc users will have the right display, sit at the right distance and in the correct lighting.
Save your $$ and buy the Blu Ray or even the dvd, and enjoy đź‘Ś
