Portable HDD (normal and SSD)

I looking to pick up some external HDD.
Will be looking at Samsung or Sandisk for SSD.

Any recommendation for normal?
I only see HP and Seagate.
Prefer WD....

Prior to this I have accumulated about 1,000 coins, so I bought a WD My passport 4TB - for around $144 - $10 (aka 1000coins) = $134, while accumuating back 1500 coins (20% cashback coupon cap). Delivery is around 1-2 days, so its relatively quick via ninjavan.

Technically I got it for if you count all the coins involved, I spent $134 with another $5 worth of shopee coins in cashback, for $129.

Heard my friend say that he saw a 4tb last show at $119-129 price range, however I did not see it myself. Perhaps you might wish to study the past year's brochure to compare prices if you are waiting for the best season to get a hdd.

besides capacity, speed is really important
when u need to back 100GB of data, normal hdd will to ages to transfer in today technology conscious...
some hdd will hang on u if keep writing for >30mins...
10yrs ago, when movie file r 500Mb~1GB, TV were 2-300MB, 10-50MB/sec still bearable

I think if you do not abuse them, they can be quite resilient.

Some of the portable HDDs that I bought is still working after >10 yrs.

IMHO.
I use external USB 3.0 HDD bay that support 3.5" HDDs.
The 3.5" 2TB HDD cost about $80-$100.
This setup is much faster than portable HDDs.
Of course will be slower than SSDs.

IMHO.
It depends on the strength of the magnetic interference.
That said, portable HDDs should be handled in the same manner.

I use external USB 3.0 bays because the cost of storage per GB is lower - I have a lot of data. Also, the bays are static - HDDs have spinning disks and any movement or vibration will potentially damage them in the long-run.

Usually, the few cases of portable HDD failure I know usually were quite catastrophic.

The best practice for portable HDDs.
a) Always on a flat and hard surface.
b) No movement and/or vibrations when powered on.
c) Proper eject from OS.
d) After eject from OS, wait a few seconds before movement.

Surely that is the #1 rule in portable HDD longeitivity.

I used a variety of brands over the years - WD, Seagate and Imation.

But mostly WDs becos they tend to be the most value for money during IT shows.
