Is it advisable to stay in pudong, or people's square? Or are there better places? This is for a first time visit.

Simply, I find that Puxi has more attractions than Pudong. Better connectivity for public transportation.

You have more than a question.
To bypass the ban, simply purchase DataTravel AsiaPacific if you are a StarHub subscriber. For Singtel, it's ReadyRoam and M1 has Data Passport. These services are seamless- you continue to use your Singapore mobile line and there is no need to insert another SIM card.

VPN is banned in China. Nobody there will sell you a SIM card with VPN capability.
You can check with ChangiRecommends for a router with VPN capability.

Just get from Qoo, search "ICC China". I used it for my Beijing & Shanghai trips in August.

So far, I have stayed at various Intercontinental hotels in Shanghai, cannot access FB, LINE, whatsapps using their wifi. Only the data roam using SingTel/M1/Starhub can. Their local SIM card definitely cannot access either.

after googling all options, eg. express VPN etc.. I hv decided to rent the wifi router from changi, at $10 a day. Its more expensive though.

Unless your data usage is high can get data roaming from your Telco. So long as it's not China sim card can already.
