I think he haven try exiting TPE to SK n punggol during peak hours. Even weekend also can jam..

Last time SK traffic was smooth.. taking bus 89 to pasir ris or changi was fast. Now take super slow

.
Can tell you are trying too hard to justify Sengkang is a good place compared to Canberra.

1. Who care whether the neighbourhood is big? It's just a name/grouping.

2. Canberra mrt station bring you to orchard or jurong east in 30mins, NSL bring you to more places.

3. Have you drove before? Some area of Sengkang reach TPE take longer than canberra reach CTE, yishun ave 8 is a big and wide road with limited traffic lights so its fast. TPE still need to connect to CTE, how does it seem good? Canberra can drive to almost anywhere in singapore within 30mins, Sengkang is stuck in a inaccessible corner that depend on TPE that bring you nowhere.

4. Near industrial area is a selling point? Beside canberra is yishun industrial area if you like. Near hougang is another selling point? Canberra is near sembawang/yishun so there you got it. You are making it sound like empty spaces is not a good thing but empty spaces are at a premium in singapore.

5. You mentioned all the crappy malls for what? Sengkang is bigger and have more useless malls, period. Only waterway point is decent enough and it is not in Sengkang. Compass One is so so. Canberra residents go northpoint which is on par with sengkang residents go waterway point. No advantage either way.

Bus 883 and Northpoint at Yislum already packed like sardine can especially on weekends! You want to see Canberra packed like concentration camp? :vijayadmin:

By the way Canberra MRT Station facade is viewable from outside/inside and station signages are up. Should be open by late Nov 2019.

Given a choice would you rather have a LRT or MRT station just at your doorstep? Piggyback on the oldest and matured MRT line, Canberra residents huat liao! :s13:

The new Canberra BTO (Feb 2020) plot (beside Brownstone EC) is already in construction! If I am a unit owner of Brownstone EC sure bang balls. Pay premium price but proximity to MRT station is not even nearer than a HDB plot!

What talking you sia lol

If Canberra Plaza open up can take some people away from Northpoint leh.

Also, why Brownstone owners bang balls? They paid a cheaper price compared to the upcoming EC and they only need cross a small road to Canberra MRT leh, more likely they got huat la

And ECs all along not near MRT de leh, this logic does not apply cause almost everywhere else the ECs also not as near to MRT as HDB

Canberra MRT station to open on Saturday

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s newest MRT station, Canberra, will open its doors to the public on Saturday (Nov 2).

Located between the Yishun and Sembawang stations, Canberra is the 27th MRT station on the North-South Line.

It is expected to allow residents in the area to save up to 10 minutes of travelling time towards the city or Jurong East, with more than 17,000 households within a 10-minute walk of the new station.

Built by China State Construction Engineering Corporation at a cost of S$90 million, the exterior of the station was designed by DP Architects to resemble a ship as a homage to the area’s maritime heritage.

In the early 20th century, the area was home to the Singapore Naval Base, which became the Sembawang Shipyard in 1968 after Singapore's independence.

Among the new station’s unique features is an art piece featuring drawings of plants and animals, titled Symbiosis. Part of the Land Transport Authority’s Art in Transit series, the artwork can be found at the facade of the station’s north-bound platform.

The station also allows commuters to access the city-bound train platform directly via an elevated link bridge across Canberra Link, the first such feature for an elevated MRT station.

Earlier this year, a 72m-long crossover track was built between the Sembawang and Canberra stations. This allows trains to cross from one track to another if needed, such as in the case of a fault.

SECOND STATION TO BE BUILT ON EXISTING LINE

Attending the opening ceremony of the Canberra station on Friday was Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan.

Mr Khaw, who is also an MP for Sembawang GRC, noted plans for the new station - Singapore’s 139th MRT station - had existed on paper for many years.

However, it was not built until a “sufficient number” of residential projects had been launched nearby, he explained.

“As each MRT line is a multi-billion dollar investment, we take a conservative and prudent approach,” he said.

Factors such as projected commuter traffic, estimated time-savings for commuters as well as estimated capital and running cost is taken into account for each new line and station, he noted.

This is done to avoid poor utilisation and unnecessarily high operating costs, said Mr Khaw, noting the authorities have a “heavy responsibility” to minimise the financial burden on both taxpayers and commuters.

“We certainly do not welcome white-elephant MRT stations,” he said.

Mr Khaw also noted Canberra is the first MRT station to be awarded a Platinum rating under the Building and Construction Authority’s Green Mark for Transit Stations, the highest such rating under the scheme.

The new station’s green features - such as energy efficient air conditioning and lighting systems - also help reduce the cost of station operations and keep train fares affordable, he said.

Canberra is the second station to be built on an existing MRT line, with the first being Dover on the East-West Line, which opened in 2001.

In May, it was announced that another two stations will be built on the North-South Line by the mid-2030s.

One of the stations, Brickland, will be located between the Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Gombak stations. It will serve residents in the Keat Hong and Bukit Batok West areas, as well as the upcoming Brickland district in Tengah.

The other, to be called Sungei Kadut, will be located between the Yew Tee and Kranji stations. It will serve as an interchange with the Downtown Line, and serve upcoming industrial developments in the Sungei Kadut area.

“We certainly do not welcome white-elephant MRT stations,” he said.

First white elephant incident

On 27 August 2005, during Minister Vivian Balakrishnan's visit to Punggol South, a resident, displeased with Buangkok's disuse, erected a series of white paper cut-outs of elephants, which were drawn in a cartoon-like style, symbolically calling the unopened Buangkok station a 'white elephant'. Soon after, police started an investigation on it as a case of a public display without permit, on the grounds that a complaint was received and that they may have been in violation of the Public Entertainment and Meetings Act, for which the maximum penalty is a fine not exceeding $10,000. It raised controversy because many people saw it as a harmless, trivial case not worthy of investigation. It also highlighted the general displeasure over the non-operation of the MRT station after it was built with public funds. It also raised questions on how much freedom of expression the government is willing to tolerate. On 6 October 2005, police closed the investigation without pressing charges but issued a stern warning to the offender.[4][5] This led then-Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng to comment to the media, "We cannot apply the law to some and turn a blind eye to others. If we do, then the law becomes the real white elephant."

Second white elephant incident

"Save the White Elephants" T-shirt design by students from Raffles Girls' School.
On 13 January 2006, during a carnival celebrating the opening of the MRT Station, some 27 students from Raffles Girls' School were preparing to sell T-shirts bearing "Save the White Elephants" to raise funds for a charity Youth Guidance. This prompted a warning from the police that they needed a fund-raising permit and that "wearing of T-shirts en masse may be misconstrued by some as an offence under the Miscellaneous Offences (Public & Order & Nuisance) (Assemblies & Processions) Rules." [6]

The girls said that they had always taken a strong interest in current affairs and Buangkok incident inspired them to start what they called "Project White Elephant" aiming to "galvanise the youth of today to rise up from the apathy they are stereotyped with and take an active role in airing their views". Punggol South grassroots leaders were impressed by their "entrepreneurial spirit and derring-do", and invited them to set up a stall at the opening ceremony of the station to sell the T-shirts.

On 21 January 2006, Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng apologised for the way the police had overreacted to the group of school girls' plan to sell and wear white elephant T-shirts at the opening of Buangkok station.[7]
