I (19F) got diagnosed with moderate asthma last year, and i had bronchitis when im 17. the problem is my specialist dont even know even if i had asthma before that but not discovered or developed after bronchitis.

Another main problem is i really want to sign on and be an Aircrew with the Air Force, if not, Navy i guess(?)

But with my health like this, im really losing hope, especially with the fact that one of the trigger is exercise-induce as well. I had a check and my current pes status is B4.

Currently, i tries to run a few times a week, do push up and stuffs and is under controlled. But as you know, its a whole new complete level if im inside. Training is tough and i might not cope. As time goes by, my lungs would get weaker if my lungs is not strong enough.

(For those who have asthma and is serving the nation, may i know how long did you guys take to improve your lung condition from your initial asthma range and what do you guys did to improve it? Eg, how long does it take for you guys to improve your lungs condition from moderate/severe to mild/borderline?

Also, is getting diagnosed at 18/19 consider as childhood or adult asthma? If adult, what is the chances of recovery?)

Anyone, please give any advice or stories to share please??? :< anyone from Medical Corps or has any knowledge? please help...

Question: if people here say you can’t sign on because of your medical condition, you will not apply to try?

Then the advice is apply thinking that if you don’t get it, is normal. But if you get it, It is a bonus.

Because we are not the MO, we wouldn’t know how you will be classified.

imagine if someone here say can, but you reply and cannot? Wouldn't you be more smashed?

or if someone say cannot, then you don't apply, then you may never know?

And with a name like yours, get the job or not, still dai sai wat...:s13:

Just go for it. No harm trying, really. You only lose out if you don't try and won't find out.

i need opinions because im really lost at this point to have a clearer mind and since y'all are serving, y'all might know how it works or the procedure and stuff.

i need cold hard truth as well, at least i wont get over-positive. If it'd something positive, then it's good to be motivated but i will have reservations as well. im just lost...

i tried applying twice, once during career talk, they didnt get back. I applied again during career week in school, they told me to try again in a year' time.

i dont even know if its because there's no slot or they just simply dont want me. But i didnt mentioned about asthma, i only submitted the application.

If you haven't even gone for medical, so they wouldn't know your conditions unless you have to declare?

So it seems like it is something else?

If there’s even a chance that u won’t be able to cope, why would you want to take the chance? Especially with a medical issue?

because i really want to be an aircrew spec, i want to do HADR, SAR, SAL. I want to save and help people, i want to fly and be a soldier. It's adventurous and meaningful. Most units trained to kill, but an ACS is trained to save.

Many years ago, i have tried to sign on as medic after my ns but got rejected... i went on to get my bachelor degree and master degree in respiratory therapy and now working in one of the public hospital (of course in singapore) and treating a lot of critically ill patients on ventilators inside the ICU and now with covid-19 made me reflect back on why i chose to study respiratory medicine and therapy.
I was pes C at that time when serving my ns in the army and i do have moderate persistent asthma as well.

You can save and help people and fly in other ways.

If it’s not meant for you, it’s not meant for you.

But that being said, no point convincing us. What you need to convince is them.

To be honest, the actual ACS jobs are very different from what you imagine. ACS is not easy to get in and the training not easy for asthmatics to get through. Why I know? Coz I trained with them. The rate of passing is also very slim, a bit like pilot selection but of course, less stringent. You need to go through Jungle survival and also Heli-Evac training, where you need to be blindfolded on a simulated up-side down heli that drop into a 5m pool, then swim out....you might not even pass medical assessment, I recommend don’t waste time.

Do you yourself know what sure what is the required PES status for Aircrew?

I tried looking at SAF website and I don't see a required PES status for Aircrew: https://www.mindef.gov.sg/oms/rsaf/careers/career-with-us/warrant-officers/acs.html

Don't give up hope!

ahh i see. just curious, why didnt you try signing on as a MO after graduating?
tbh although im Pes B4 right now, which equivalant to the past Pes C(?). i wanna wait a few years for my asthma to be better controlled before i take the next step. Im 20 this year and i heard that they are recruiting up to 28/29 yo. so why not just try to control with regular running first? maybe it will improve?

and oh ya, thankiew for taking care of us, fighting the virus! #Thankyouhealthcareheroes

i did alot of my homework, i know its tough and the different jobscope one would have as a loadmaster/ winchman/ air refuelling officer.

i know its not easy but this is something what i really want. just hope that my asthma could be under controlled, so i could try applying a few years later? i stay near one of the airbase whereby i can actually oversee the entire airfield. i just wanna be part of y'all so badly when i see y'all in the sky. it's tough but def it's worth it.

thank you for sharing tho!!
