Hi, due to **, I have just started to setup a NAS at home. However, the transfer speed from Laptop to NAS thru wireless is slow, 3Mbps. I have read online that Router could be one of the factor that's limiting the transfer speed.

I am currently using the Starhub Broadband, D-Link cylinder router, sorry, cant recall its model.

If I were to replace my current router, what is the recommended brand to go for..? I have read online also, Netgear Orbi or Google Nest seems popular. Like to gather some advise before going for it.

Many Thanks...

Dlink 868l is old but still relatively ok router. I rem I can do 200-300mbps easily in the past.
Looking at your 3mbps speed , the problem is not the router . Check other things like firewalls , security settings , router placement, etc.
Or you can buy a new mesh router and come back here to ask why it’s still 3mbps .

are both the nas and laptop beside the wireless router when you did the test? Speeds can be affected if it is too far away if you are connected to the 2.4ghz band.

I am on 5Ghz band. Wife's transferring her drama wireless to the NAS using her laptop. My router is placed besides my TV in the living room and she is working in the study.. Distances should not be that far to get such low speed I guess.

I have also check my NAS SMB settings, it does shows 1000mbps. But I am still puzzled why is the transferring speed so low. I am a newbie on this field. Not sure where is the source of the problem...

There are many factors that could cause it. Test and eliminate one by one.
Do a speedtest first at both the nas and laptop location first. If one us slow. It might be due to placement/location.

The other is settings. Laptop firewall. Router qos, nas settings

Your need to check your configuration in router to find out what is limiting your wifi transfer speed.

For example
2.4 ghz - set to N only
5 ghz - set to AC only
Make sure separate SSID for 2.4 and 5 Ghz
Turn off all QoS

Second limiting factor is your wifi device chipset.

For example
Intel AC7260 chipset, I could achieve download speed of 400 mbps
But realtek chipset, normally abuot 200 - 250 mpbs.
Even though both connection link speed 866 mbps.

3rd factor limiting transfer speed is the file size
Big file normally transfer faster
Smaller files especially those in KB to a few MB will cause slow down

4th factor is distance
how far are you from your router ?

Lastly what NAS are you using ?
My neighbour use Synology nas, on wire can transfer close to 1 Gbps after he upgraded the ram in the NAS.

My dlink nas is pethethic 20 MB/s to 30 MB/s average.

Upgrading your router alone will not help much .
Main thing is try to understand your hardware limitation.
Either workaround it or replace it to achieve best possible results.

Speedtest.net. Best if you use the same laptop (wifi) and another device such as mobile as speedtest. This helps check if the laptop is the issue.

Oh I see.. I am using a Synology NAS DS918 with 8GB RAM.
My NAS is placed beside my Router and it's besides my TV in the living room. I am staying in a 3rm unit.

Refer to this video on running iperf
Sometimes could be cable issue or switch if you are using one.

For drama, just go online to watch video streaming, why waste storage space to keep the drama?

Haha... She download all beforehand and then watch at her own leisure.

Honestly such free video streaming service is usually available 24/7 and worldwide. The bad of downloading is waste time waiting for the download, waste storage space and waste time arranging the files. Some drama not nice at all or do not like it will have to delete it. Some drama are no standard at all.
